I just got out of my 750. The car is very nice, but you will be in service constantly. After 3 BMW's I'm fully cooked. Never again!

Now granted, I have been known to get a bit aggressive buying cars at times over the years but I've already had 4 new car factory buybacks (my wife's Lexus '13 GS FSport, '07 Carrera S and a '00 MB CLK and a '97 Carrera Cab. The new Z06 is overheating, 991's w/PDK's are having hesitation problems etc and have yet to be solved by the manufacturer. I think all the marques are subject to problems. Lately if I find a great car like my '13 XKR I just keep it making it part of the car household so to speak.

I'm anxious to see what this car is all about in person.

You know, the fact of the matter is that I live within easy walking distance of a major BMW dealer. If I get a new 7 and it has problems, at least I won't be constantly driving a long way to the dealer. Being so close, I could become such a royal pain in their back sides, that I'm sure I would get some sort of preferential treatment. Or, they might get a court order to keep me off their lot. Actually, the whole idea of it is just too delicious to ignore. Heck. I'm retired and it just might be fun! AND, I might actually end up with a car I like!

I think the new 7 is a much more attractive car than the W222. And, it gets to a point where you hate rewarding a company by buying their cars, when they continue to ignore your wishes. I know, I'm beating a dead horse here, but I hate not having the Pano roof as a CHOICE. I hate not having just a PLACE for a spare, I hate not being able to permanently defeat the ECO feature, I dislike that my S looks WAY too much like a C, I hate that I can't get a solid color white exterior and what I really hate is the way MB feels that THEY know what is best for everyone. The hell with tradition, let's change everything! Forget our long time customers and what they have come to expect, bet the ranch on the kids!

A new 7 is looking better all the time.

Looking at all your posts over time I wonder why you got the W222 in the first place. If you didn't like the looks why bother?

If you are considering the 7 series, do know that it doesn't come without the panorama roof either

I had hoped that the car would grow on me. It hasn't. When I needed a car, I didn't like the current 7 series. I had owned a W221 that I loved, so I went for the 222, hoping to "fix" the problems. I now have a spare that takes up too much space in my trunk. I had planned on putting a wrap over the roof, but now worry about the glass getting too hot and exploding, so I decided against that. Every teenie bopper in Newport Beach drives a new C Class, that looks like a "Mini Me" of my car. In the end, we all make mistakes. The 222 was one of mine. It's a great car, I just don't like it.

My biggest gripe about the Pano roof, is the way MB does it, where they run the black glass all the way to the windshield header, which dramatically changes the look of a lighter colored car. BMW doesn't do it that way, as the front portion of the roof on the 7 is body colored. And, the "black glass roof look" is SOOOOO last week! It seems like every Japanese & Korean maker is now building their cars like that. It's become a trendy look and I'm not a trendy guy.

I understand your reservations about the pano roof. Personally I like the airy feel of then cabin and think that the glass roof simply is viewed as a 'need to have" in a luxury car, similar to leather seats and power windows a long time ago.

I had seen the same debate on the old SL's (R230), where people were discussing the panorama roof and even the parktronic sensors. A good 50% of customers deleted the option as the thought the little dots in the bumpers was disrupting the design of the car.
Today none of these issues are even thought of anymore...

Just FYI,the new 7 series is more or less a carbon copy of the 3 series (minus the rear) and the new 5 series (G30) and 3 will look like the 7 as well.

I sure hope you like getting in the car and wondering which fault message will come on next. I also hope that you will enjoy driving a loaner for a week or two at a time while you're driving a rental or a 3 series loaner. I just got rid of my 2nd 7 series and it was the same for both of them. It's a very nice piece of garbage.

Because the F01 had way too many problems. That being said, people have short memories. Mercedes had plenty of problems with their flagship back in the day of the W220 but still managed to get their act together with the W221. It's unfair to automatically assume the G11 is going to be a nightmare.

agreed. whilst the current 7 has its share of problems, that does not mean the entire fleet is garbage. ive had 4 bmws and all of them were brill. my latest one - the one i have now - is so perfect it's hard to believe given i beat the snot out of it. i hope bmw can make right with the new 7 and do away once and for all the problems with the current gen 7; me thinks they will. they have to, really.

bmw has a winner on their hands with the ///m4; it is a real power beast and is as close to perfect in quality of build as i have seen in a long long time. i love it so much, i am talking to my dealer about building a 2nd one to have so i can track them both with my mates. (only talking at this point because i am also thinking about buying the new c63s coupe amg instead as a 2nd track car when it comes out in the spring - but that is off-topic to this thread.)

my ///m4 is sakhir orange and depending on the lighting has many different personality hues; it's a real colour chameleon! the other ///m colour that behaves this way is the austin yellow - sometimes looks yellow, sometimes looks green -- and that is why, hype, you were probably unsure of the colour on the one you saw.

Very well put. Everyone has horror stories about one brand or another--one model or another. I can't believe that some heads didn't roll in Munich over this last 7 Series and that BMW hasn't pulled out all the stops in making certain that this new car was done right. Should they bring another disaster to market, they must know that there are thousands of American lawyers ready to pounce the moment they see the opportunity.

Mercedes W220 issues were mostly electrical and paint and quite systemic. Took them some years to get this under control.
BMW's issue was primarily the V8TT engine. That is a bigger deal.
The engine had received small updates in 2013 and is going unchanged into the new 7 series, so time will tell if the problems have been resolved.

That said there are plenty of nice BMW's in their lineup but reliability and quality scores below mercedes. Even our BMW service manager told me that....

One of my huge gripes with automakers is the way the coerce you into vehicles with their most powerful engines, by not making all options and features available in models with the smaller engines. I always want the best interior, the best suspension and pretty much the best of everything, but I am quite happy with engines producing in the 300hp to 350hp range. The idea of a normally aspirated big six is appealing, IF I can get everything else I want.

I doubt that any mass manufactured product will give you "everything you want." I haven't found THAT car yet although the 222 is close. Even RR will only customize to a point. And a custom-tailored, $40K Armani suit will not be made in non-brand approved fabrics and patterns, even though you may think it's too narrow a range of options. And so on. You know this, I'm sure.

So, we get it already. You really are disappointed in the 222. It happens. I would love your next post to be a report on the first 48 hours with your new BMW 7. This thread is kind of wrung out at this point and it is time to take this play into Act 2. Hey, we would all benefit from hearing about the positive differences between the two cars and I can't imagine anyone here wouldn't want this long thread to have a happy conclusion.

The new inline six will be turbocharged, but still a honey. FWIW, MB is going from V6's to inline 6's as well (inline 6's are inherently smooth).

BMW's inline sixes are legendary and a safe pick. They simply have little experience with a V8 while that is Mercedes' forte.

Streamliner, the exterior of the new 7 series is the most controversial aspect amongst BMW loyalists. If you like it you are good to go...
The interior will be very nice; this is the most Mercedes-like BMW ever made. Air suspension, MBC, air fragrance, interior seating cues, ambient lighting, panorama roof; it's all there...

If you are upset about the C class looking like the S, how do you feel about the new 7 series getting its entire design language from the 3 series. At least MB made the base model look like the flagship, BMW made it the other way around.

Have you ever had a BMW before? If not- I can't wait to hear the loud complaints first timers have. Such as:

To shut of the car you press the stop button. Then take your foot off the brake then hit he stop button again. Every. Single. Time. God forbid you forget to remove your foot from the brake because you will just restart your car. Even the most seasoned BMW loyalist will sheepishly admit to this.

To leave the car you have to pull the door handle twice. Nope, that's not a joke. The first pull of the handle unlocks the door. The second pull opens the door. Try to never have a passenger in the car, they will invariably ask you what's wrong with the car.

You will absolutely love the auto wipers that are manual. Because with BMW in order to use the auto wipers you have to turn them on. Every time you drive. Only BMW can redefine automatic as really manual. Kind of like how it was faster to mail in your Obamacare application than do it online in the beginning. Only the U.S. Government could make snail mail faster than the web. Sorry I digress.

How about not being able to close your trunk with the remote? Nope, hands only baby- we at Bavarian Motor Werks want you to touch and feel your car as much as possible. We love her, I mean really really love her. You should too. I mean you will, or else.

How about not being able to control the rear side shades from the front. Nope, that's not your window so you should leave your grimy hands off. Leave the car wash with one shade up? Pull over, get out and fix it. Because at Bavarian Motor Jail we want you to see just how nice your back seat is. You know you never get to see it, I mean you haven't done THAT since college. Now a days you have to put it on your calendar, much less spontaneously exploring the generous space we have given you in the back seat.

At Bavarian Metal Jail we feel you should be safe. But just in case you ignore our supreme knowledge we will make you read a legal disclaimer. Every time you get in the car, in case you forgot. Oh, and in order to use the nav screen you will have to sign a legal waiver by hitting agree. Every. Single. Time.

One more thing. At BMJ we insist you do not know what temperature you want the car to be. So we have turned your automatic climate control into a manual one (see, you already consider this normal). The center vents will blow ice cold air in winter and heat in summer no matter what temperature you select. Unless you take our orders to touch your car again. Love your car, caress it. We love it and so will you. So we make you turn a manual dial from hot to cold to confirm what temperature you wish to have. And it will stay at that temperature until your next glorious experience touching your car again.

Oh, and because we know you love us at BMJ more than your family, community, country and your God, we will have you visit us as often as possible. Unexpectedly too. Don't worry though, after your first year or two you will consider this totally normal. You will look forward to your visits and all of the things I have mentioned here. Because this is the ultimate driving machine. Say it again, believe it, chant it. And whatever you do please never drive a Cadillac. For some unexplainable reason people have dissapeared from our world after doing such a dastardly thing.
