The New Tesla

Consumer Reports rated the new Tesla P85D a PERFECT 100 points. In fact, it generated a raw score of 103 on a scale that only goes up to 100. The high-performance Tesla's incredible showing actually forced Consumer Reports to reset its scoring system with P85D as the new benchmark. Does this make anyone think they should have bought a Tesla instead of a Mercedes 550? The Mercedes 550 was rated 85 points and the BMW a little higher.

I think you may have typed the wrong score for the S550. Attached is a news report that lists the S550 scoring at 96 points and not 85.

With that said, the Tesla cars are clearly making some significant strides but for me the S550 is king. If the charging station infra structure was in place where gas stations are located, I would take a look at the Tesla but I just drove 2700 miles from PA through the Midwest. Charging stations are a huge issue.

So no comparison for me but Tesla cars are impressive.

Cool Consumer reports does not decide for me ...

Not me. I am currently shopping the S550, 750, A8L and the Tesla ... an to be honest, the Tesla interior does not do it for me, and the tech (IMHO) of the Tesla is for the most part superficial. If the interior was any where near the quality of the S, it would make the decision a little harder.

Who in their right mind would consider consumer reports ratings for purchasing a luxury car?

Fuel time

When the time spent refueling equals a gasoline powered car (+-5 minutes or so), THEN I'll consider an electric car....

This could be with wide spread swappable battery pack stations or some as-yet uninvented battery technology....

You are correct. Consumer Reports ratings:

1 Tesla Model S P85D 100
2 Tesla Model S 99
3 BMW M235i 98
4 Mercedes S550 96
5 Porsche 911 Carrera S 95

Consumer reports is for people who don't know nothing about a certain kind of product--including style!
Consumer Reports is NOT for people who understand a market segment.

I agree, the inside of the Tesla is totally crap. My neighbor's rattles if you drive it over 45mph. If the interior was like the s550, I would get the Tesla in a heart beat. Until then...

Do consumer reports mark a security breach about Tesla that might cause someone hack it ?
Do consumer reports report back that this was beknown to Tesla headquarter crew and made them force into updating their software

Do consumer reports ...........sorry I am fed up with S Class Owners giving a "nudge" about something else

I agree with you 100%. The Teslas are awesome, but the lack of easy-access public charging makes me very uncomfortable every time I drive an EV. With a long commute and 2.5 kids, it's a no-go for me.

I found it funny in the Consumer Reports video that after spending 20+ minutes talking about how great the Tesla S is and why it scored 100 on their test ... none of the three presenters would buy it if they were spending their own $127K.

No they didn't. Because there has not been a successful hack on a tesla yet. You may be confusing the recent news where hackers were able to gain control of a tesla. You missed the part where tesla hired them to do it, gave them software to help them and the thieves needed to be plugged into the car to make the hack work. That's not a hack or security breach....

Honestly, the Model S is a great car. Tesla dug into the MBZ parts bin for a few interior pieces.

What sets the W222 apart is the premium suspension, interior, and overall presence. MBZ would be smart to push the plug-in S-Class and see if there's a market for a full-electric version.

They already use Tesla's tech for the B-Class.

Totally Different Cars

We have a 2015 S550 and a 2015 Tesla P85D. I don't think you can compare them. The S class is an ultra luxury vehicle, the Tesla is not. I drive the Tesla 99% of the time. It's crazy fast, it's super quiet and it doesn't need any gas.

I see a lot of people talk about the charging infrastructure (or lack of), the inconvenience of having to charge etc. but it depends on how far you drive. If you are just commuting to work and taking short trips it's absolutely amazing. Charge it overnight in the garage and off you go the next day. With over 250 miles of range (other models closer to 300) the 'range anxiety' issues are overblown.

For long trips, again no gas but you do have to plan ahead a little and can't be in a big hurry. There are more and more Super Chargers all the time.

But the Tesla isn't as comfortable as the S class. It isn't as refined, not even close. I don't view it as a luxury sedan so my expectations aren't the same as they are when I drive the s class.

We looked at everything out there, 7 series, S8, Jaguar, Maserati and none of them compare to the S class. After 3 e classes, E500's / E550 we can't believe how incredible the S class actually is.

So if I want to 'ride' it's the S class, if I want to drive it's the P85D!

MalibuWaveRider, thank you for the comparison of the Tesla P85D and the S550 Mercedes. Sounds like if you are just commuting to work, the Tesla is the way to go. However, there is a large majority of people who do not have the benefit of "charge stations" (the closest is 30 miles from my location). And, if a repair is needed, the closest place would be over 300 miles. As for driving, I think a comparison between the Tesla and the AMG would be a more reasonable (especially if the road had some curves). However, if I really wanted a "bad *** car" for performance (in a straight line), I'd buy the Hellcat. The Tesla seems like a hot rod golf cart with leather seats. Its not a car enthusiast kinda car. Just my thoughts, and thanks for your comparison.

It's good to hear from an owner of both vehicles. I've driven the Model S (not a P85D) and S-Class and my observations are spot on with yours. It feels like a slingshot from the torque of the Model S; with the S-Class the ride quality is unmatched.
