And you know who is below Tesla in reliability? Mercedes, which just ranked #21 in the reliability rankings.

Seriously though, both Tesla and Mercedes has work cut out for them to improve reliability. I'm hoping in the case of Tesla that by now they have addressed most of the reliability issues in their initial cars.

My experience with Mercedes reliability has been great! My '06, '08, '14 and so far '16 S550 ('06 was 500) 4matics have been great.
It was my '01 S500 and my '00 ML320 that had quality issues. In fact, my 2000 ML320 was simply the worst vehicle I have ever owned with the motor eating 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles at 27,000 miles. At 37,000 (after 10,000 miles of oil consumption tests) MB replaced the motor. What a piece of sh--!
Some MBs quality went through a period of difficulty but my experience has been that the last 10 years has been very good. Just my 2 cents.
Oh and I must add, my '87 300E, my '98 E320 4matic and my '00 e320 4matic were awesome quality/reliability. In fact, I still own the '2000 e 320 4matic with a 120,000 miles and still ticking.

Reliability depends a lot on where you are, how you drive e.t.c. Over 4 generations of S Class', I've only had one major problem where the car was parked for several weeks and wouldn't change into a gear from neutral. Thankfully Mercedes Mobile Mechanics came and helped me out.

The only thing that matters when talking about large sample sizes is the average rate of an occurrence. There are car manufacturers that have gotten their average reliability numbers down to be in the top 5 or top 10. Tesla along with Mercedes has a ways to go before they reach that point.
I think for the most part if someone wants to buy a Mercedes or Tesla they will buy it. Where reliability stats come in is the depreciation and resale value.

Take the S Class one on one with the S model for a better comparison.
