2016 S Class 550 Noise

Is anyone experiencing interior road noise in addition to wind noise?
I have owned this brand new car 3 months and noise is getting worse.
Dealership states other S Class have same noise in addition to stating that maybe when tires wear in the noise will cease.
Any comments or opinions?

do you have run flats? If you swap the tires to non runflats you may see big improvement

That is a good question.
How do you know if you have run flats or not?
Would that be if you don't have a spare tire?

I just got a new S550e, with 20-in Pirelli P Zero tires.

My car is a good gauge for any noise, because when driven in electric mode the car is virtually silent.

The noise OP mentioned could be the run flat tire noise? If look at the side wall of the tire, it should have small mark 'Run Flat' on it (mine does.)

I do hear a little bit tire noise when cruising on freeway, but not noticeable unless I really try to pay attention to it.

Thanks I do have run flats but this noise is very annoying and is not what I expect for a $100k vehicle
Do you think the dealership will rectify the situation with non run flats

Run flat tires might not be the quietest, yet the noise shouldn't be that bad in the S-Class.

Do check a few things before attempting to change to different tires:

- Check if noise is actually coming from other source instead from the tires.

- Make sure the tire pressure is within the factory range, not too low.

- Check if there is any foreign subject (rocks, nail, etc.) lodged in the tire tread.

- At last, check wheel bearings. It shouldn't happen on a new car, but one in a million chance the wheel bearing might be a faulty one, or damaged when the vehicle was tied down improperly during transit on truck or boat. It happened to me before.

Best,

I drove my AMG pkg S550 for 17K miles on 20" Pirelli OEM run flats. I didn't get any noise and I also kept my tires inflated at an extra 4psi front and 6psi rear.

I just switched to the "20 Continental EXTREMECONTACT DWS (DryWetSnow) tire for the winter and they are a tad quieter at best negligible. I would say your noise is not a tire issue. Please check all items listed in this post to ascertain the cause. Stay hopeful.

I'm sorry, but I pretty much disagree with everyone. What is normal to some is annoying to others. Run flat tires ROAR, period. If the sound seems normal or unobtrusive to you, I'm happy for you. For me, the OP and a great many others on thus forum, the tire noise is unacceptable and many have changed to conventional tires. My 2015 S550 with 18" wheels was delivered with RFT, but it was negotiated, before delivery, that the dealer would swap them out. So, I drove the car for 500 miles on the RFT and then Bridgestone Serenity Plus non-RFT were installed. Ride much improved, but the tire noise was a DAY & NIGHT improvement, to the point of being virtually silent. If you are picky, critical and just plain want as close to silence as possible, then dump the RFT and get a good, QUIET set of conventionals. I highly recommend the Serenity Plus or the Michelin Primacy MXM4's.
P.S. I carry a W221 compact spare and a W222 jack in my trunk, both purchased on eBay.

Agree completely. The OEM run flats are abysmal. Seriously. This weekend they got replaced on my 2015 S550 (at 15K miles) with Conti DWS06s all around. Let's put it this way, next time I get a car with run flats, they're coming off day 1 and stored in the garage until lease turn in. The difference is significant. Quieter. Better handling and just the overall experience you know the S Class was designed to deliver. When you're paying $1500 a month for a car, $1000 bucks for the right tires is just money well spent.

I too am not a fan of RF's, mostly due to the harder ride, additional weight and booming over some types of bumps in the road. I must say however, the 20" Goodyear F1 Supercar RF's that came on both my '16 and '17 S Coupes are not bad (for RF's). I was able to put a few miles on the 16 before getting the 17 and can say the tires held up quite nicely. I've also found the 20" Pirelli RF noisier and harder riding than the GY's.

Performance based summer tires will make more noise whether RF or not due to the aggressive tread patterns.
