Windshield

Driving against the sun, I've noticed the windshield has innumerable 'markings' for lack of a better word. It's as though the adhesive between the two plates of glass is crazing. Anyone have this problem? It's not pock marks and we don't have sand storms here. Help?

It can be.... Not from a sand storm, but just driving behind any trucks or cars on the highway. No matter how small the object traveling at 70+ MPH against the windshield will make these marks. Take a good look at your headlights at night with the lights on, you should also see similar marks, especially if any wax is on them.

One other option you can test in a small area to rule out over spray from any number of things...

Stray a 1' x 1' area with Windex or diluted ammonia and (carefully) scrape area with a (fresh) razor blade, then check again. I detailed my truck and the over spray from detailing the engine got onto my windshield, I blamed the wife for a bit till I found out it was all me.....

Right side? There were early reports of distorted windshields that were replaced under warranty

I own a 2015 S550 with the optional heated windshield that has a problem when it rains lightly. The windshield appears to have the remnants of a plastic film that has vertical streaks of that appears when the wipers glide across the windshield. I have tried every type of detailer and cleanser to remove this with limited results. Does anyone else have this problem?

You can actually use a clay bar on the windshield as you would your paint to deep clean the glass of any contaminants. There is a fairly long thread on Autogeek about the process and recommended products here : http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/...indshield.html

I have been using a clay bar for years and have demonstrated it's use at MBCA car shows. It was one of the first attempts I made dice it is so safe. It didn't do much to solve the problem. Thanks for the advice though. My dealer offered to replace the windshield but I declined for fear of causing other problems.

This is a photo of the vertical streaking. The horizontal light is the fluorescent light I used to make the streaks appear which you can only see under certain conditions. It looks like it may be residue left from a protective plastic film when the vehicle was shipped and the heated windshield was turned on without removing the film first. I will try to get better photos. Has anyone else seen this on their vehicle?

oh wow... nothing like that with my new S. I agree with your theory about the heated windshield being turned on with the protective covering. Can you feel the lines or any type of residue when touching the windshield? A trick I use to know when to clay bar my cars is to place a plastic sandwich bag over my hand and lightly run my hand over the body panels - you can feel even the slightest bumps. I've never done with glass but might work as well.

Good luck with the fix.

WoW to that one..... It can be a lamination issue internal to the glass. That would drive me nuts. I would have the dealer do the swap if it were me. The will use MB Glass and your sensors will need to be recalibrated.

Did you try to clean one small area, say a 3" x 3". I don't think clay will do it, I tried it on water marks and it did not work well. You can use straight Ammonia and a NEW Razor Blade. Just try it on the one area. My gut tells me its in the glass....

Mine is not linear markings. It's more like thousands of shards of glass and near the rear view mirror, it's circular in distribution. Will have Service take a look this week. Also, I don't have heated windshield. It's 80* @ 7pm. here.
