I hit a tailgate out of a cattle truck. Ran over the *&%&$ thing on the road in a heavy rainstorm at nite. Dididnt see it until it was too late.
It wiped out the covers on the bottom of the car, Wheelhouse , cut a tire, and cracked the front rim. How important is it to replace a cracked rim and does it work to have it welded. There are shops that specialize in that. New wheel is $850.00

Absolutely. There's a saying floating around - that you should only ever buy a car that you can buy again in the blink of an eye, in case you wreck it. I'm not implying anything, the author just asked a question, but if you drive a W222 and save $ on a wheel...
Rim repair is possible. It never hurts to find a competent shop that does it and see what they say; could be a simple $100 fix. I'm ALL for saving money if it suits me. I just wouldn't give that type of reaction to $900 and I definitely can't afford to be driving an S Class. Well I could but I couldn't "with the blink of an eye" as shadenfroh put it.
TL;DR - If I owned an S class, it would be because I wipe my *** with $900 bills
Sorry to hear that , if it can be repaired it can be repaired but rims and tires are most important things that connects the car to the road .If there's any inherited risk despite the repair I would get it replaced

While I agree with you 100%, lets not get carried away about billionaire's view on money. Watch this \/\/\/
But my point isn't that $900 isn't a lot of money. It is to almost everyone. Even the millionaires that I know will tell you it's a lot of money and they don't just brush off $900 without thinking.
My point was that: 1) It's nothing to freak out about. 2) It's not a lot of money when it comes to one of the most important parts on your car that keeps you safe.
If the rim is cracked, I would be concerned about the integrity of the rim, and would probably replace it.
With that being said, there are tons of folks selling OEM rims on ebay. Many of them are those who have replaced their own rims with others and just want to sell the old ones. Many sell as a set, but some sell the rims separately.
Heck, this may be a reason to upgrade your rims to a different OEM rim. BTW, I'm assuming your insurance is going to help you pay for all this anyway right??

Ive been around a crowd who spends twice the money we spent on cars and they are always trying to save money. I didn't get to this point in life by not thinking 900$ is nothing.
I know people who try hard as hell to look rich lease cars and would rather live in a one bedroom apartment to make that 1100-1300$ payment for a car rather then working on being financially set. S class isn't a car that I know immature crowd buys but I've seen gtr and Amg cars leased by some not so rich people. So whoever thinks if you drive an expensive car like this you can wipe 900$ is still living in a time when people didn't lease cars as much.

If I am ever in position to own an S class it will be in part because I am cheap.

Except we aren't discussing spending $900- $1200 on a trinket or bauble. We are discussing spending that on something that, if it fails, could cost you your life... Save a few bucks to risk having a rim fail at high speed and careen out of control, no thanks... I don't know about the rest of you, but my life is worth far more than $900 to me. Be prudent with your finances, yes. But at the sake of your safety? No.

It is on the outer area of the rim. If the popular opinion is that welding does not work and they will fly apart a week later and I can get killed I will gladly spend $900.00 with no remorse. On the other hand if some of you have had experience with a wheel repair I would like to hear about it. I am semi retired Electrician and have worked very hard for my money and I just dont like spending on foolish things. I sure Love Driving my S550.

Are you able to post a photo of the Rim? If its minor, it can be repaired. I'm sure if others can see the actual damage you may receive different responses. Without seeing the damage, most people are just giving there opinion. I have seen a lot of road rash / curb rash repairs done well. I have no personal experience of cracks. I'm sure if it is a reputable company there will be a warrantee / guarantee, but heck, if it fails, what good is the warrantee, damage already done.
I personally would replace the Rim, have the damaged one repaired and post it on EBay.
1. If you have a good relationship with your Dealer, I'm sure they will match the price you can find on line for a New OEM Rim, or better yet save you maybe 10%
2. Have the Rim repaired and post it on EBay, recoup more of your money.
3. Know you and your family are Safe with a New OEM Rim.
Sort of best of both worlds. Both sides have valid opinions. Every used car I ever purchased, 1st thing I do is replace the 4 tires especially if any of them have a patch. That's just me... Either way, I'm glad no one got hurt except the car.
