Yup... Every year you must get the car inspected. The shops are now responsible for testing the Tint on the side glass. You will fail the inspection, must get the tint removed, then re-inspect. I don't think many inspection shops want to risk loosing the license over improper inspections.
A local tint shop is offering no charge to remove the tint, and charge to re-tint. Depending on how much glass, the cost could be a waste, but I'm sure there are people out there that will do it. 80% tint is practically no tint, other than the benefit of heat reduction, its silly to do 80%.
One more control over the population..... Lets see how far they push it...

It's just my opinion but I'm okay with that law. I'm sorry for the mechanics who have to do more work for the same money during the inspection process but I always find it a little bit creepy to be next to a car and not be able to see what's going on inside.
I live in New York City where there is very close interaction between cars and pedestrians and I'm always worried that the person inside might have a gun or be a bad actor.
I keep a car in Florida with a tint but you can still see through the glass and see the passengers.
I see the need to tint your windows but not completely black them out.

The law was changed years ago for all side windows on sedans, wagons, etc. Over 5 years ago as I remember when I looked up the VTL section for tint, after getting pulled over twice in a 30 day period from the same nice officer for tint on my old car (GS430).
The 70% is a joke but what gets me is the law still allows SUVs to keep window tint on the back and rear due to auto industry lobbying. Yet the state representative from Syracuse that did the bill did it for officer safety and SUVs, which can hold more potential criminals, are allowed to have tint. Just comical stuff. I've asked around to a couple of shops to see if they'll pass me, some didn't even have a tint meter yet. Going to be fun finding a shop to pass the car with tint.
