This is the news here...
We’re expecting Mercedes to offer the next S-Class in multiple body lengths, from a short wheelbase right up to the extra-long Pullman. However, there’s a good chance the S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet will no longer be offered. Don’t be surprised if the void is filled with a Maybach offering. We should see the first prototypes wearing the actual body of the new S-Class in late 2018 or early 2019.

It's kinda odd considering seeing heavily camouflaged cars for to conceal upcoming cars ,recently BMW G12 7 Series ,they even used a zebra patterned to the facelift version

Be honest guys (and gals), if you saw a 221 and a 222 side by side back in , say 1999, wouldn't you think the 221 was the more modern version car over the 222? Technology aside.

think the W221 looks quite dated to me. Fender flares were a retro design for MB going back to the sixties. Not modern IMO.
Personally I find the W222 much more elegant and understated. Unfortunately, the MY18 headlight design is a step backwards.

W222 is more streamlined car . I like fender flares in the W221s but they make the car look older yet intimidating .I have never been a fan of pre facelift W221s either ,sorry

It will be interesting to see if the W223 has flares, but I doubt it will, unless perhaps they were very mild (I would imagine MB would not want it to resemble the 221 too much).

Those flares, as you say, really did distinguish the S class at that time, and still do, whenever I see one it's unmistakable, but I also noticed that in the pics

To me, the W221 was a striking car. Even today, when one goes by, I find myself watching it. I will say that I find the front end to look a bit dated now, but everything from there back is still stunning to me and I find it much more attractive than my 2015. Even with all that said, if I could order my 2018 with a late W221 Body, I’d do it in a heartbeat. I loved the flares, but I especially love the rear end. Don’t even get me started on the fact that the Panorama Roof was optional and there was a jack & spare nicely housed under the trunk floor, where EVERY road going Sedan should have them.

W222 is just a million times more elegant when on, braking and even during the daytime (old video but still illustrates the lighting design - clearly not as cool as the new OLED S-Class coupe lights )
Compared to this:

I know that my feelings about the looks of the 221 vs. 222 are based entirely on daytime appearance. I never really noticed how the lights appear at night. Good point, Wolf.

For the first time, the S-Class will be based on the new rear-wheel drive platform MRA II, because the current model W222 is still based on the further development of the old W221 platform.

THis thing seriously needs to get some bigger fenders. Looks too feminine.
