Transmission

My 2015 w222v4 needs transmission replaced. Car is under full warranty and only has 20K miles on it. MB said that they can only give me a remanufactured one. I don't want a remanufactured transmission on my car. Can I get a new transmission from MB? What's difference between new and remanufactured ?

Thanks,
Will

How do you know you don’t want one if you don’t even know what it is? And why would MBZ give you a brand new transmission when you have already driven the car 20k miles? I am sure the remanufactured transmission is remanufactured to new specs. What is the warranty on this transmission? Why would MBZ waste their time, money and labor costs on something that isn’t up to spec? Not great business practice. And lastly, wouldn’t you feel better knowing that you are helping the planet by reusing and recycling rather than having old transmissions dumped in a pile somewhere?

don't know the condition of reman'ed transmission and don't know their reman process. Can it be a transmission had 200K miles on it and only replaced the failed parts ? If so, I will get a transmission that being used 200K miles except the part replaced?

My question if any had such experience and get a new tranny under warranty ?

I called MB week ago and the help desk ppl told me reman'ed is the only option. Called them again escalating. Hope to hear from them on Monday.
My transmission was not that bad, only d5 to d4 had rough shift during cold start. After they replaced 2 solenoids from valve body, most gears shift rough. Then they said to replace tranny.
I believe they did not put back each solenoid to its original position.

I just want to know any specific reason for new one and if my asking is not reasonable. I want them to install a new one or fix my current one.

Thank you for your reply

I have found MB to be very accommodating with regard to these kinds of things, but it will depend on the individual regional service rep that's involved (some are more giving than others).

Be glad you're not dealing with Audi USA, they'd probably tell you there's nothing wrong and you'd end up getting nothing.

I would be curious what is new and what is retained in a reman unit. If all the wear parts are replaced then it is essentially a new unit. If they retain used gear sets / bearings or control units then I think that you have a fair squawk.

The 7G trans has been plagued with problems and there have been several versions produced with the last being the 722.9 (I believe)...most of the problems involved the megatronic units with small metal fillings clogging up the components (some transmissions were/are eating themselves alive). There is a VERY specific protocol for servicing these transmissions/megatronic units and I'm glad MB is just not replacing the megatronic unit and giving you a totally rebuilt unit by the factory, as I've questioned some shop foreman and they missed some vital steps when dealing with these units. I'm not a technician but I carefully watched the instructional video produced by MB in Germany that the techs are to follow..

OP: If they will not give you a new unit, just make sure you get the latest version with ALL the latest parts and it should be ok. The new 9G trans is leaps and bounds ahead of the 7g...MB did a great job with this gearbox.

hard to tell. Here is MB link about remanufactured parts. They replace core parts that have problem, not the entire thing...

yeah, that's what I requested a new one at beginning. When they ordered, I asked if it is new one, the SA said it "should be" new one. After they got it from MB in German, I asked again and they said it is remanufactured...

Look where a new one got you...... At least you know the entire transmission was checked and to spec. with all the current updates. Just make sure you get the warrantee / copies of the service records of all work performed and what the next service recommendation is.

There are, but most likely not worth it in the long run. One of my 911's needed a new motor at just 12000 miles and all I could get was a re-man...engine was fine. You'll be ok, and if not you'll have a great case for a new one.
