I believe that mbrace is a yearly charge for pre 2017 models, but free for those after. Why would mercedes not offer the free package to all W222 owners?

Free for 5 years for the lowest level. Additional MBrace services have 3 to 6 months free only.
The Secure package which includes Stolen Vehicle Location Assistance costs $199 per year after the free 6 month trial.
The current free offer is likely based on a competitive marketing strategy.

Because there is a cost associated with each subscriber. Adds fairly significant costs in support as a lot of older MB’s are not compatible with Mbrace and still have the older analog equipment installed.
All downside, no upside...
Plus the base Mbrace is pretty worthless, at least to me. We still use the Mbrace secure because I like the concept of the emergency services.
