2021 e All Terrain, 2001 e55
I drive a 2015 S Class. I thought the new S Class would come out in 2019 and I would buy a new S Class in 2020. I did not want to buy a car the first year it was introduced. Now that the new S is a 2021 car I would have to wait until 2022 and that is too long for me to wait for a new car. So I am buying a 21 All Terrain wagon. We own a county home so and I had a wagon in the past. I ordered the wagon with almost every option with a $86K price tag. (I wish the E Class had the wiper integrated windshield washers the S Class has}

I expect to buy a New S Class in 2023 and keep the wagon but I would like to buy a MeBz EV car if they have one in 23.

The new E class is a so called "Mild Hybrid" and I will keep it. I thin we have to think about the future and EV cars are part of the future.

Stream points out you have to own a car to review it. While I would not be able to review the new S and the current E, I will be able to share my thinking. I predict that the S is more luxurious than the E. Stream also points out that the views expressed here are the opinions of the poster. We are each entitled to our own opinions. I am on many healthcare related forums and while there is debate about treatment options posters are respectful and open minded.

I have owned almost 70 cars of all types and over the years the S Class cars have been the best...... In my opinion.

When I get my new car I will review it for you all.

thanks

phil

Obviously this is an old discussion, but I do find it amusing. People on all forums with cars lower down in the pecking order consistently try and assert that their car is really just as good, or the difference is "not all that much.

I havent owned an S Class or a Mercedes for long, but I have owned the whole pecking order of Lexus sedans, 2 ESs, a GS, 4 LSs, and I did it out of order, had 2 LSs that were family cars than I got an ES, another ES, a GS and finally came back to the LS and had two LS460s. Once you own the flagship car you really begin to understand the differences. No, an E Class is nothing like an S Class.

My impression is that an E equipped like Streamliner's wagon (including ABC and V6, top interior) is pretty close to a scaled down S. That is one does not need to buy a car as large as the S to get the S class level of driving refinement in a smaller package. True or not?

Not, IMHO. I have never owned an E-class, but I grew up with them and have had a number as loaners while my S was in for scheduled maintenance. I wish I could point to something more definite than a "feel," but these cars feel very different. Everything in the S feels more solid, more smooth. The E lets more harshness of the outside world (whether it be noise or ride quality) in the cabin.

The E is a fine car, but it isn't a short wheelbase S class (MB makes such a thing; it isn't imported to the US). Any rational person seeking a luxury car should be thrilled with an E class; for those who want more, there's the S. That said, the S is a bigger car and drives as such; for that reason, a person might rationally prefer an E. To that person, I say congratulations on your money saved.

No, no E will ever equal the driving experience and refinement of the S. This is by design obviously.

A big part of this is how fussy and particular the driver is. We have a loaded, 2019 E450 Luxury Trim Wagon. It has AirMatic (I don't believe ABC has ever been an option on the E Class), Acoustic Comfort Pkg, 18" wheels with non-RFT and a very cushy, Designo interior with massage seats. It is a VERY comfortable car. That said, my 2020 S560, with MBC, 18" wheels with non-RFT and the Exclusive Nappa interior is really more comfortable to me, in most every respect. The wagon is very quiet, but the S is even more so. My wife does not like to drive the S, as she feels it is too big. She loves the E450 and she would tell you that it is just as comfortable as the S. Obviously, she and I disagree on this.

I feel that our E450 Luxury Trim Wagon is a magnificent vehicle. So, of course, MBUSA has dropped it from the line and given us the All Terrain, which may be a great vehicle, but I just can't get excited about an "All Terrain" vehicle when I will never drive it on any terrain other than public streets & highways.

2019 S63 4Matic+, 2018 E400 Cabrio, wardens car.
I have both an E class Cabrio that the warden drives and my S550 and they are indeed different cars. The S is much quieter and more refined but not by much. The E is a very nice car and definitely a step up from the C class but it just lacks some of the specialness of the S. And the E I have is very well appointed, it is just not the same experience.

Sorry I meant AirMatic not ABC.

I've ridden in S Class cars but have never driven one. To me there is no doubt that the S is of the highest caliber of luxury/refinement that MB has to offer. As stated above, it is by design. I was interested in a S Coupe, and while I can afford it, it was not within my predetermined budget. We are looking to move to a bigger house in SoCal, and well that's where the money will go. So I drive an E Class coupe that I am thrilled with. Having never driven the S coupe, I don't know what I'm missing.

As between directing resources to an appreciating asset or a depreciating asset, you've made the right call.

That said, boy, do I love my S-Class! LOL

I always tell people, including myself, to never drive a car better than what you can afford or are prepared to pay lol. When I got both of my LS460s I deliberately never drove an S Class because it was more than I wanted to spend. When I had my ESs and my GS, I also avoided driving an LS lol
