You're pulling my leg, right? First of all the colors are not the same; you get over 22 standard colors plus custom 2 tone and special custom paint if you desire. The interiors are the most luxurious to date. Notwithstanding, that you can customize them to your taste. To say the Maybachs offer nothing special is like saying a McLaren SLR Benz is nothing special compare to a GT model. You get more headroom (for taller people such as myself) and of course the rear seating and it's creature comforts are unparalleled! The additional amenities scream luxury and the ride is nothing short of the best in it's class!
Were not talking parking. Were not talking just you and your wife's needs. We're talking luxury and comfort. The best of the best; and the Maybach models are what Mercedes considers their top of the line model in comfort and luxury. It's a wonderful car! That all being said, is it the best? Not necessarily. It all comes down to what is best for you. It's certainly not best for me. It's like debating ABS versus standard suspension; both sides will argue why they prefer one over the other. It all comes down to needs.
It's funny how everyone thinks their particular model is the best or far superior to other models. I've never advocated that. My comment that the Maybach has them all beat was more of a tongue in cheek response to the "nothing is better than the S " claims being posted. The best is what suits your needs, period. In my case the E class is a better driver and handler than the S (at least in the CAB models), and as is in the case of yourself, it's just me and the wife....so I don't need the additional space of the S model. To me the ride is similar and not that much different...which was the original premise and question of the OP. The best could be an A model; or a C model...a GT, E S, or G. The best is what is best for you.

I stand corrected. I have been so underwhelmed by the Maybach that I have not kept up with their latest interior/exterior color choices. But, color choices aside, I stand by everything else I said about the dolled up, extended length S Class. Of course, you could find me guilty for not considering the $3200.00 “Handcrafted Silver Champagne Flutes” as just SO luxurious, but I find those and the rest of the car to be ostentatious and only well suited as a chauffeur driven vehicle.

So what....Maybach is still considered a luxury model above the S series. It has it's own separate model page apart from the S series on MBUSA.
The E class is considered Mercedes "executive class" and is historically it's best selling car. It is mid sized compared to the S and better handling to boot in the CAB models.

Consider this. The S is a big car, the car is not nearly as responsive or nimble because of its size and weight, and you are far more isolated from the road in the S class. The S has all manner of gadgets and technology and so many creature comforts. More of an old man's car.
The E is much more of a drivers car, it can be had in an AMG version with performance tires, it handles, breaks and accelerates better and it gets better fuel economy but it has a lot less passenger and cargo space. Plus it's $40,000+ less expensive. I test drove both extensively before I bought, and these are my observations.
A lot. depends on whether you are buying new or old as well. Both are wonderful cars and have their own personalities.

I had a brand new E Class estate loaner, I loved the new, smaller steering wheel and the handling of it, but that's the only positive thing I found about it compared to the S. My kids in the back asked every 10 seconds when the S is coming back on a 200 mile drive, there was a very noticeable difference in comfort, road noise and space. I've had to promise to never not have a S Class lol. Not sure now whether to get a facelift S and spend the rest of the money on a fun car or to spend more on a fun car.

The world is changing, my nephews and friends kids in their 20s/30s are now in S Class', Wraiths and Ghosts, cars typically expected to be owned by old men, and now they understand the speciality of being in a luxury car, isolated from your surroundings.

Good for you. I don't care for sedans or coupes. I like CABS /Convertibles. For my money the S CAB can't compare to the E CABS handling, and the ride and comfort is similar. By the way, if you're thinking of getting an S, better do it soon. The new renditions of the 2020 models look hideous!

Skip the facelift S and go for a Mercedes-E63s ED1 cab as a fun car. If you don't want to spend that kind of money, go for the E450 CAB or the AMG E 53 Cabriolet and take your nephews and kids with ya. All beautiful and sporty cars.

If they made an E63S Cabriolet it would've hands down been the best 4 seater cabriolet in this market. If I did get a S facelift, a new E63S would seem like the complementary car for the money I'd have left. The E53 Cabriolets also beautiful but it would only make me wonder what the E63S would be like. Need to wait until my treatments finished before I start driving again though!

How much of a difference do your 18s make? I wanted 21s but compromised for 20s due to ride comfort, and the smaller wheels I had were 19 runflats so not much of a difference there. I don't think I'd go for 18s due to how it looks in terms of size, but from what I've seen you say in the past its much more a difference than I imagined.

Thank you. The price difference isn't too concerning to me because I know I'm getting the very best. It's the size... I do love large cars - but I've become really comfortable with midsize cars lately... If the difference is night and day, I'll choose the S-Class. Otherwise, I really like the E-Class. I figure I'll get some input from the community before I go test drive both...
Just some food for thought....

How much larger is S vs E?
2019 E Class vs S Class
E Wheel base = 115.7"
S Wheel base = 124.6"
E OA Length = 193.8"
S OA Length = 206.9"
E Front Tread Width = 63.7"
S Front Tread Width = 63.9"
So 9" in wheelbase and 13" OA is difference.
I always thought it would be more.
Bet it was back in 90's

So 9-1/2" in wheelbase and 14" OA; not much different than today....but holy moly, look how much wider they were!

I have owned 4 E class sedans with the last one a 2014 E550 fully loaded. Currently have a 2017 S550 cab. The different between the 2 in terms of comfort as described is night and day if that is your main concern. Nothing rides smoother or is more comfortable than an S class. As far as performance driving of course the E should handle better, but I recall driving the E through the Malibu canyons which I did quite frequently and frankly I thought the E handled horribly thru there. Granted I also have a CLK63 black series I usually drove thru there. However, the E did not handle flat at all thru the corners and had to take those turns quite slowly. Whereas the S surprisingly handles rather flat but it is without a doubt a "land yacht" to drive, it is such a big car. In reading your original post if you want comfort the S is the only way to go. Just my 2 cents for whatever its worth. Oh my S also have 21" wheels and it is still the most comfortable I have ever driven. I have attached a photo.

Oh dear I better not let my wife read this thread...with all the references to the Sclass being an old mans car She keep telling me this every time we pass an sclass on the road "look another old man"
I bought my first sclass W222 S350d last year at the age of 40, not as powerful as most of yours on here
Funny thing even my dealer where I service it (didnt buy from them) asked me if I was dropping it in for my dad.... my wife was standing behind me laughing.
Still wouldnt have it any other way I love the car.
Here was the dealers video:

As to the original poster's question of size vs. functionality, the problem with the S class is not just its length, but its wider too. I love my S550 (2017) and also have a Lexus LX570. However, both are very wide cars which are harder to keep in the center of a lane (especially on tight narrow roads) or to squeeze into tight parking spots. I love my big cars, but my wife who turned 60 refuses to drive my S class stating its too big. We test drove the Genesis G90 - which she loved as well, but then again, she rejected it since it's too big. She insists on a mid size car (or maybe even smaller) Unfortunately, there is no mid level sized car that rides like a full size luxury car. Part of it is cost. Obviously, Mercedes or any other manufacture for that matter have large luxury sedans and smaller sedans that don't offer the same level of luxury as their bigger counterparts. The one car she did like was the new Lexus ES300h (hybrid). Its about the same size as an E class and is designed and calibrated towards the very smooth/soft/comfortable and quiet ride side of things. On a side note, I got to spend 30+ minutes behind the wheel of a new Bentley Mulsanne. Its huge, heavy (6000 lbs compared to 4600 lbs for my S class) and drives very nice to say the least. I guess size and weight do add to the luxury quotient.

Hi all, older thread but I have found it really useful.
My goal is similar to the authors post, i do long km regularly and i want comfort, quiet, and a safe, easy, relaxing drive above all else. The roads are not fun, just hours long.
My funds are limited and in the ballpark of an older W222 (e.g. 350), or a newer model E or C.
I know the next step is driving them, but...
Is a 7 year old W222 better than say a 2 year old W213?
Or does the newer model E make enough ground to counter the age and wear of the older S?

A W222 is a significantly more refined and technologically advanced vehicle. From the suspension down to the cabin noise isolation capabilities and most importantly, THE MOST COMFY SEATS ON EARTH! However, them babies is expensive to maintain. Then again if you get the right year and mileage combo then you can dodge the more costly repairs and enjoy the car for many years without spending anything. But know something uber expensive could always fail.
As for an E-class, they're so effin solid. W212 or W213. Just don't get a 4-cylinder version, that's no fun. Also spend a ton of time finding a highly optioned one and you'll be in S-class territory. Things like acoustic comfort package and airmatic go a long way from a driving perspective. Things like Alcantara headliner, burmester 3d, and real leather go a long way from an opulence perspective.
At the end of the day, either option is superb. Both those chassis' are solid af and amazing.
