In my country labor is cheap, so even low cost cars has driver/chauffeur .
S class rarely anyone will drive it on his own, because the best spot is the rear seat with front seat pushed maximum forward and parking a 5.3 meter car is pain.
E class is still a driver's car size wise, but S-Class in my super traffic jam city is best to be chauffeur driven.
Well people do not really notice it like a Ferrari, but in hotels or some malls you get priority Valet parking ( for a fee of course ) at the front of the lobby and on the road people know your salary is well above average.
With our average US$3,600 annual income per capita and S450L costing US$200K on the road and road tax a year at near US$3.5K, people know you make a decent living.
So S-class will be more of a status symbol, other than extra comfort.
With our roads quality so bad, if I were to upgrade to S450, it will purely be to isolate myself from the road noise and be more comfortable while being chauffeur driven.
If I upgrade to S450 I will sit at the back. For now, I never like seating at the back on any sedan when I am not driving myself, I truly enjoy seating at the front.

Mine gets constant attention. It's because where I live, you don't see many AMG cars. Today, as I was leaving my hotel, I saw a red 2007 S600. I went crazy over it because I also had a 2007 S600 back in the day and it brought back some wonderful memories! I did some minor mods like putting on AMG wheels, putting in a MidCity engineering module so that my wife could watch DVDs as we drove to the beach, and then eventually I put a Renntech modulator in it and it really gave it some extra spunk of speed and horsepower. Right now , my car has been in the shop because of some mis-fires.

I'm in my early 30's and get comments about this behemoth at work constantly. Stuff like "are you rigging payroll or something?". Most recently at Easter my Moms neighbor ran outside and said something to the effect of "that thing is amazing, what the hell is it?!".

I'll betcha most people don't know if the front or rear wheels drive their car...

When used to drive S65 and later S63, both had Zero attention, just another car in the crowd.
Have to say, even the current cars are not getting any looks either and it is absolutely fine with me.

I think my white S550 looks like every other white E-Class and C-Class on the road, so I am not surprised there appears to be an S-Class deficit attention syndrome. People on this forum have a hawk eye when it comes to Mercedes products but most others only identify one when the 3 pointed star is visible. For whatever it's worth, many think my 2008 CL63 is brand new. Go figure.

In the past few years Mercedes has made their line up of cars look so similar in design I doubt the average person on the road could tell the difference between a C, E or S Class Sedan. Those of us with interest on these forums can but the average person.....no.
In the 6 years I have owned SL’s the multiple family/friends visiting at my house and going out to my car barn to see my collection, not one of them knew the SL was a convertible!

I agree on both, that's why I still have this and am not selling it. I love it. I love boxy looking cars, that just me, and I can't change, yet... All the Bentley and rolls still have em in their big sedans, and big rolling safe to me.

Where I live the S class is very rare. I see maybe one every two weeks or so. This is including most of the modern models (W220, W221, W222.) So, to me and most people interested in cars, they do get a lot of attention. Pretty much any foreign luxury car around here gets attention. My W221 gets a LOT of attention oddly. I found I get more attention in my old 2007 S550 than my previous car, a 2010 Camaro SS. Lots of comments and thumbs up from fellow car enthusiasts. I guess the most important factor is where you live and what cars are popular. But, regardless the 222 S is one of the most striking sedans on the market imo. It’s just gorgeous.

Whenever I drive my S-Class around, I think I do get noticed because of how much presence it has. However, in my Jag F-Pace, I think I get more looks because of the white and black contrast outside. I like to think that I get eyes in the carpool line at my sons school because another dad has a homely silver S550 without the sport package and 20's

Personally, I didn’t know anything about C, E, or S-Class until I was considering buying a Mercedes. Any four door sedan looked like an old man car to me. I think the Mercedes brand is well-known, but the individual models are noticed by enthusiasts.
On a somewhat related note, I bought a Rolex watch about a month ago. I wear it everyday and leave it sitting out on my dresser at night. Even my wife hasn’t noticed it.
I think many of us live in our own world, and we notice things that are important to us. Plenty of other things slip past unnoticed.

Although the modern C, E, and S classes have similar design cues, the experience of sitting inside an S class is oh so different from sitting in a C class or E class. I drove the latest C and E class as loaners and the interior luxury and build quality do NOT compare to the S class.
Anyone who knows anything about luxury cars will respect the S class. It has long been a sedan of choice of dictators and politicians.
