s550 questions for a new buyer

I have a few questions...I am looking for a new car and this car has been on my list for a very long time. I think its one of the nicest cars out there from day 1 it was released. I am looking into a 2015 s550 and I have a few questions...

1) I read that this car can be scary to own when it hits 75k+ miles but to be honest, I am surprised because Mercedes tend to be reliable vehicles. What are your thoughts on purchasing a 2015 s550 with about 50k miles?

2) Is extended warranty recommended?

3) How much would it cost if I were to swap the steering wheel out with say a 's450' steering wheel?

4) I do not see any major differences between a 2015 s550 and a 2016. From what I understand, 2014 is the first year and its pretty much the same car from 2014 to 2018...right?

2014 to 2017, not 2018. The 14's through 17's have been proven as extremely reliable. I had one up to 80,000 miles and had zero problems. From what I can remember, the 2018's were the only ones that had some issues but I don't think they were that bad. Extended warranty is very expensive but if you can get one I would advise it.

Thanks for the response. I read some people were paying about $3,800 for 2 years, give or take a few.

I have a 2015 and it has been very reliable for the last 40K miles. I would not worry about buying one with 50K miles. Warranties are a suckers game with this car, you will spend thousands of dollars for something you will probably never use.

good to know! Mercedes are known for being well built cars so I was surprised when I read it gives issues and most want to sell before 60k miles.

I was debating between this and the Range Rover Sport but I called for extended warranty on it and 4/5 third party companies did not cover the Range.

I'm not familiar with Range Rovers but I suspect that the S Class would be heads and tails better in the reliability department. My friend had to put a $600 wiper motor in it.

okay I feel much better. That last forum talking about the unreliability of it got me thinking twice about it for a second.

My 16 Maybach has about 75000 miles on it. I recently replaced one front wheel hub, a leakin air cond line, and two idler pulleys. Total cost for all those was less than 500 dollars for me to do.

i did have one final unexpected repair and that was a new Active body pump. That cost about 3000 dollars for dealer to do. I would rack it up as a fluke failure.

the car run perfect!

I do not have any rip off extended warranties. .

oh ps I did have to spend about 500 and installed adjustable rear camper rods And got alignment with corrected camber. I got tired of the rear tires failing on the inside sidewall prematurely.

Too many german broads
Talking

Just buy a warranty if you are concerned about reliability. The W222 is pretty solid overall ..Katie22 will disagree on the warranty though...

I got a 10 year/100k mile Continental full coverage warranty that my dealer said they honor 100% on my 2018 S63 for peace of mind as I plan on keeping it 10 years and driving less than 10k miles per year. You'll probably be fine without one. Hopefully.

The AMG car has a bit more stuff on it so I think it will be worth it. On my 2008 S63 it cost over $10k in the first month of ownership which stuff that died including the Nav unit. Then I got a 2012 S63 which also was moderately expensive to own but I didn't go into the warranty too much and some of it was leftover for my 2018 car so they gave me a bit of a discount. I did use about $3000 in repairs on my 2012 and the warranty was around $4k.

It's hit or miss. Personally, I'd say just wing it and don't buy it for your situation.
