I found this passionate article on Car and Driver, they are apparently fans of the S Class:

I read it and one of their very few gripes is one I share: the rear seats don’t fold down.

I realize that it would be difficult—if not near impossible—to have electrically operated, reclining, heated, massaging seats fold down, but many folks like myself, almost NEVER have rear seat passengers other than kids or grandkids and do not want or need all of those features in the rear. For us, we would just LOVE it if a standard, basic, rear seat with the fold down function was available as an option. They obviously have the tech to do this, as my wife’s E350 sedan has it. The W222 trunk is small for such a large car and folding rear seats—open to the trunk—would really give some of us some additional utility. I would order it in a heartbeat.

Im in the same boat, the wife's W212 folding seats are clutch and oddly enough, not a standard option, its a box to check which is bizarre. Plus her trunk is MASSIVE.

A car
None of the flagships give you the ability to fold down the rear seats because of a priority being placed on ride comfort. Torsional rigidity is compromised on very long cars if you make the rear seats foldable. Heck, the A8, as an example, has carbon fiber as a part of the structure of the rear seats holding the two sides (left/right) of the frame together.

I wish such an option existed too but I get and respect why they don't let us do this.

I don’t buy that explanation. If they wanted to offer the fold down rear seats in the S Class, I’m sure the engineers at MB could figure out a way to do it and still maintain the rigidity of the current car. The E Class sedans with the fold down seats are solid as a rock and they are not all that much smaller than an S.

Found this regarding BMW E46

For the E46:
Sedan (w/o folding seats): 18000Nm/deg of torsion
Sedan (w/folding seats): 13000Nm

It is great.. and it is supposed to be an extremely quiet ride:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/matthew.../#607248ee1949

And it is indeed quiet.. but i find that there are a surprising amount of wheelnoise, at about 50-70mph. And whenever exceeding 100mph, the windnoise from the sunroof becomes annoying.
Quitest in the world? hard to belive.

Sounds like run flat tires to me. My 2018 S560, with 18" wheels and Bridgestone QuietTrack, conventional tires, has virtually zero tire noise at any speed. The once or twice I have gone over 100mph, there has been zero wind noise from the sunroof.

it is not run-flat. It was oem AMG 20" with Michelin Pilot's. And now aftermarket 21" with Falken Azenis. The noise is about the same.

You have Quiettrack tyres.. i just looked it up, and I can get Bridgestone Turanza T005. Is that what you've got?

I don't know what the T005 is, and I do not believe that the Bridgestone QuietTrack tires are available in 21" for the S Class.
