Command Unit Needs Replacement

Apparently the “Command Unit” or “Control Unit” has failed in my 2014 S550 (46000 miles). The dealer wants $6000 just for the part alone. It is part #2229005108. I have looked at rebuilt parts and they are less money but state “without premium audio”. My car has the Burmester 3D premium audio system so I am not sure if they would work. Anyone had any experience with something like this. There is a chance my after market extended warranty will pay part or most of this but the whole thing is very frustrating.

I would, by all means, try to get the warranty involved! GL to you, sounds very frustrating!

18 AMG GTC and 22 F150 Limited. Past owner 16 Maybach, 17 Brabus Smartcar, 06 Ford E150, and 22 G70
Have they tried to do a RESET on the head unit. I can say that my head unit on the Maybach and the GTC both locked up ONE time. Both simply needed a reset and all has been well ever since. For the Maybach the reset involved holding the CD eject button for a period of time that of which I cannot remember.

Katie

as far as if the part will work. I would suggest fireing up a copy of EPC and check the parts on a standard s class and then plug in your VIN number as see if the part number is the same. I have a suspicion that the head unit is the same and that it only feeds the amps....... assuming the head unit is the same part number and you install it in your car I am going to suggest it will probably need to be mated to you car with a Mercedes Scan tool.

The first thing they tried was a software update and I was told this could take up to 3 hours. I waited for 2 hours and they came in and said the part was bad. The service manager contacted the after market warranty company and since it is such an expensive part the warranty company must send out an "inspector" to look at the car before they decide if I am covered. In the mean time I can drive the car but none of the functions of the Command center screen are available. The cars A/C works but I cannot even determine what temp. I have it set at. The center screen constantly displays the message "Bootloader Active".

We're all hoping for the best OP, don't see how they could say no! At least you can drive your car with this issue, if it wasn't drivable.....that would be lame!

Too many german broads
Look at used if no warranty coverage. The audio system has nothing to do with it if it is programmed to the car correctly. Avoid the dealers crazy price. Who is your warranty, you should be able to figure out if it is covered or not. it may not be "new" but may cover used parts if covered at all. I hope you have coverage for this. Definitely a rare failure.

Just wanted to follow up on my post concerning the faulty control unit. We finally got the report from the 3rd party Inspector and the Warranty Company has agreed to cover the repair with some limitations.

They will not cover the $6000 OEM part from Mercedes. They will, however, cover a remanufactured part, which they will supply. They stated that if I wanted the Mercedes OEM part it would cost me an additional $1700. So I deduce from this that their supplied part is worth $4300. I did ask about the warranty on the OEM part vs. Rebuilt part and they stated the warranty was the same. Both are warranted for 2 years.

The labor was also in dispute as the Dealer said the repair would 3.5 hours and according to the Warranty Company’s “tables” this repair should only take 2.2 hours, a difference of 1.3 hours. The “extra” 1.3 hours would be my responsibility and at $160 per hour cost me $208. There would also be a deductible of $100 per visit, which would be my cost as well.

So in summary: My Cost: $308 Warranty Company: $4652.

I am inclined to accept this. The Dealer has been very helpful with this, even providing a loaner car free of charge for the duration. Also, the loaner is a 2020 Mercedes C350 with only 473 miles when I drove it off the lot, which impressed me even more.

Obviously the repair has not been made yet, and there could still be issues ahead. I will keep everyone informed as to the final outcome.

I had this happen a few weeks ago on my 2016 S550 with about 55,000 miles. What’s strange is that I went in for the NAV update and after the update, everything was working, except that the upcoming streets and highways were showing on the NAV screen as red question marks. Took the car back in and they found Control Unit failure. In my case, CPO warranty covered OEM part and labor. I still find it concerning that this unit failed on a 3.5 year old car with only 55k miles in my case.

Glad to hear some assistance arrived! If you can swing it, sounds like it may be a good deal. And with the other perks you mentioned sounds like the dealer is behaving pretty well. Make sure to get some doughnuts too Thanx for the update

Glad it is going to be taken care of. And some people here think extended warranties are a waste of money....

Wanted to post a hopefully final update on the command unit replacement. I got the car back a few days ago with the rebuilt command unit. Everything is working fine and the repair seems to be a success. My final out of pocket cost was $308 and the warranty company cost was $4652. The warranty initially cost $2500 for 3 year "gold" coverage. The warranty (or VSC as they call it) is from NESNA (Nissan Extended Sevices of North America). I still have over 2 years of coverage left so obviously it has paid off.

I am having the exact same issue right now quoted $6000 for the dealer replacement part found one on eBay for $899 now out of stock found another on eBay but not sure it will match $1100 crazy with this fail. My vehicle has 27,000 miles on it 2014 550 S Checking with a re-manufacturer in Canada that may be able to rebuild the unit… This seems like a crazy lot to go through for a Mercedes product

See my posts earlier in this thread to see how the issue was resolved for me. It's now more than 3 years later and the replacement Command is working flawlessly.
