W223 has 4D audio, which appears to utilize bass kickers in the seats (really!)

The German company Audiotec Fischer has product line of speakers that use factory mounting. I priced out a full set at crutchfield and think it came out to about $1500. Then to really take advantage of those you’d need a navtv module and amplifiers, so that would be a pretty major commitment between purchase and labor.

Scroll down the page for the speakers:

Ok, I have done research on the midrange speaker. It is 3.57", 90.8mm cutout, 34mm or 1.35" depth it is 126mm outside width 4.961 " The task is to search for a speaker that has those dimensions. BUT without actually taking speaker out and figuring any more capacity for width or depth. It would be nice to go to a 4" speaker and be able to go deeper as 1.35" sure isn't much!!

I heard there will be speakers shaped like little flying saucers that fly around the occupants ears to get the best ever soundstage created in a high end system

Pulling that thread

Well I am living with my bass improvement and debating the rest.......I think I am going to do the flying saucer rotate tweeters and a pair of Audiofrog 4” midrange. Then that will be it....really, I swear!!!

Keep us posted on fitment if you do anything in the doors. Would love to do the JL C7 tweeter and 3.5" mid in the front doors but don't want to buy the speakers, rip the doors apart and discover they will not fit. I do not want to cut into anything so fitment is pretty important.

Futment

I agree, fitment is key. I researched 4” mids and 3.5 mids. Some 4” will fit, that’s why I chose the Focals, I’ll keep everyone posted

I wonder though if it's the amps that are more of a problem than the speakers. I wonder if the 3D audio option uses the same speakers as the non 3D? Or if the speakers are higher quality in the 3D system? From what I've heard it's mainly in the quality of the amps. The 3D system has super high quality amps that are very clean sounding and of course have a higher power output which makes a big difference.

I guess I’ll find out

The Focal 4” midrange speakers were 229.00 on sale from Woofersetc.com. I have to remove door panels anyway to put the rotating tweeter setup in. If the midrange can be made to fit I will install it.
I did look for a car with 3D for four months, I had to have black over black car with low mileage, that narrowed an already small percentage to almost nothing. Quite frankly I almost didn’t buy the S class because of how crappy the sound system is. I came very close to buying another A8. I had a 2014 E550 sedan though and really liked it. I wanted an S for a long time, drove some S63s, while nice cars just didn’t need that much power all the time and maintenance and insurance was higher, never mind the buy in cost. I am very happy with my S550, I think I am on the right track with improving the SQ. BTW, had an Audi Q7 2021 loaner last week, B&O sound isn’t what it used to be, and the touch screen interface for everything is annoying as hell!!!

It sure would be interesting to see if there are different part numbers for the 3D speakers vs the non 3D speakers, I'm mainly talking the upper door mid range, I know the tweeters are different with the rotating tweeters. Plus the 3D has lower door mid bass speakers that look to be around 4 inch speakers or so, would not get much bass out of those. All I know is that my 3D system sounds amazing and makes the car a real joy to drive. I've thought on my wagon running another multichannel amp with a sound processor before it but I really don't drive the car enough to make it worthwhile and I mostly am driving the S class with the 3D audio system.

I really like the bass coming from the 12” JL box and amp I added, although I could see it being too much for a lot of S class owners. It really adds a lot of depth to regular music and blends well or slightly heavy listening to the radio at normal volume. However put on something with heavy bass and it hits hard which has really surprised the few people that have heard it, just clean and awesomeness. I can only imagine what a W6 or W7 sounds like, and am tempted to find out.

The 3D tweeters also sound good and are a little brighter than the originals. What the car could use now is more mid bass, but that’s going to be a lot more work. I’d like to try the stock lower location in the doors like 3D cars, but the non 3D door pocket goes way back into that area along with some other stuff I felt with my hand. I’d also have to figure out slick grilles, run new speaker wires to each door through the door jambs, and add another amp. I like the looks of the JL C7 6” midrange grille as it would be a similar appearance albeit wrong shape, but at $500 each I’ll probably pass.

So trying to decide to leave it alone at this point, or open a can of worms adding to the doors, or shop for a low miles used S560 (or 63?) that has 3D sound already in it.

I like the way you are thinking. I have a 12" JL woofer as well and it does everything you describe, one of these days I will snake the remote amp control wire up forward to the center console. There are some bass tracks that are just OMG and need to be turned down. Yes, people are shocked when they hear AND feel the bass the JL puts out. Now, as far as the midranges go, if you put your ear up closer to the speaker grill that is just under the factory tweeter location you will definitely hear how muddy that 3.5" mid is. My plan is to replace that speaker with a Focal 4" and see what that results in. I am thinking though that the real ultimate fix is a DSP and separate amps etc....but, I dont want to spend that kind of money NOR am I willing to go buy a car with 3d as I haven't fully depreciated my existing car for three more years.Hopefully my rotating tweeters and mid speakers will be here soon and I will get going on this upgrade

I finally got around to pulling the 3D Burmester sub out of my S63 and got my JL W7 installed. Night and Day difference. Not sure why MB put this cheap POS in as an option but not surprised. New sub was installed in the trunk floor and ported. Kept same trunk space (will remove the molding for the burmester sub eventually)

Wow. Is it possible just to remove the existing 3D sub and put a jl audio in its place in the same box? If so I might do that. Ya the bass could definitely stand to be tighter in the 3D setup. Good idea.

Thanks. My original idea was to do just that, but I already had the 10" w7 laying around, and it didn't fit so the shop did a great custom box where a spare tire would be. It really thumps and balances everything out. I have everything dialed in very low and the bass knob in the cabin at about one quarter turn. At half or 3/4 it is almost ridiculous. I haven't turned the bass all the way up and don't plan to.

I think the 3d sub is a 6inch woofer. The box is very well made but the subwoofer is paper with a puny magnet. You should be able to put something nice in there as long as the air volume stays sufficient.

That looks great! The W7 sub combined with the 3D mids and highs must sound incredible. Did you have to change anything else? Any pics of the enclosure?

Yes meant to say it looks great, I was on my cell phone earlier at work. Good job. I think the factory sub is a 8 inch. I may end up taking the stocker out and seeing if I can get a better 8 inch like a JL Audio or maybe this Kicker.
Amazon Amazon
for $79.00. Probably get to work on that soon, should be a pretty simple mod I'd think and worth it. That is probably the biggest weakness with the 3D system is that sub.

How did you get the original one out? I just looked at it and it seems pretty solid, I don't see any screws to take the shell off and get the subwoofer out?

Looks Great! Under the sub grill, I would put some fine speaker cloth. Sub frequencies are non directional, so the speaker cloth will not affect sound. Any debris, small pebbles etc, will turn the speaker into a popcorn machine

Quick question ... I think in here it says the standard sound system has 13(?) speakers .... that would be a high and mid-range in each door (total of 8) and two woofers up front, one in each footwell. That's ten ... where were the others?

At least 2 in the rear deck, and one in the dash.

I think the back doors only have one each though

The 3D system like the OP's has 27 speakers. On the Std. system there are 3 speakers in each door up front and 2 in each door back doors, Thats ten and then the two subs under the dash and a center channel in the middle that makes all 13.

Hey, thanks. So the 'center channel in the middle' is in the dash somewhere? One of my speakers is blown and I think it may be the one in the dash :-(

Thanks! Definitely sounds amazing. So much richer and fuller sounding now. Nothing else had to be changed. Took the factory signal and input into a line out converter and wired it up. Here are some pics. (Carbon fiber in the "spare well" is clean and untouched.

Thanks! If I recall correctly the beauty cover pops off with clips. There are screws on the side of the subwoofer box that are holding it in and one on the front.

That looks fantastic, custom and clean. So did your installer calculate the volume of the spare tire area to see if it would be a good match for the 10w7, or just give it a whirl and see how it sounds? I like the idea of not loosing trunk space, which I did somewhat with my current w3 box.

Where is the main battery in the 63? My 550 main battery is in that floor pan so that would be a problem if I were to attempt a floor install.
