EZpass transponder issue

Anyone have issues with Toll transponders not being read when going through booths? I have to stick mine out of the window every time I am going through a cashless toll.

There is a coating on your windshield that helps to keep out heat and RF. However, there is a gap in that coating near your rear view mirror (you can see the gap clearly if you look at your windshield in daylight, at the right angle). Mount your EZ pass there. Works a charm.

there are two RF pass-through openingS. One is as mentioned to the right of the rearview mirror electronics box and the other about 3 inches up from the bottom of the windshield about center of the windshield... .my EZ tag is in the lower and it works perfectly... the upper will get my V1 as soon as I design and print an aesthetically pleasing V1 holder with my Makergear

Use your cellphone light at an angle in a slightly lit garage or outside just at dusk it will show in both places on the windshield

Yes there are two openings in the coating. On my S65 the old style 4” square transponder worked fine positioned in the one beside the mirror. When we finally got the new small transponders with the three position slide switch none of them will work in the opening beside the mirror no matter how they are placed. We have three, none work. They will work if placed on the center of the dash panel close to the windshield. They read through that gap fine. This is true for all the highway toll readers we drive though. Kind of annoying, we just rely on the plate read when using the S unless we are in an HOT lane, then we need the passenger number for the correct toll.

None of that worked for me. I tried in ANY position on my windshield. It was a no go. Once I put it here, never a problem. I never have to stick it out a window again. YAY! Best decision I've ever made, EZ pass, wise. It may be ugly, on the license plate, but it works beautifully.

I think the RF cutouts only work for the older style transmitters that are battery powered, so only the RF signal has to get out. The newer smaller transponders are no longer self-powered. They get inductively powered by the tollbooth reader and I think the cutouts are not big enough to let enough energy through. In that case you have to get the external license plate mount transponder as shown above, however, with those you can't select the number of passengers, so you might just not carry a transponder at all and have a license plate account instead.

I'm not sure why we can't already standardize on the transponders in this country and have car manufacturers integrate them in the car. That's how it works in Japan for example. No ugly transponder in the windshield. It's part of the car and you can control it from the Infotainment system. I know Audi was going to offer it in the USA, but I think it stalled at trying to enter agreements with the different toll agencies.

I'd be nervous to mount it on the license plate that somebody would steal it and be driving through tolls on my dime. A lot of States offer two different types of EZ passes. In Florida here it's called the Sun pass and it comes in two different types. Either with suction cups and can be moved for different cars which is what I have. I keep that one in the center console and when I'm going to be going through tolls like to Miami I stick it in the lower part of the windshield. To the right of my mirror I have my gate opener pass where I live, there again they have two different types. The one that was simply a sticker with some kind of chip in it I could not get to work but I bought one of the box ones from the HOA a little more money but it works fine.

Somewhere behind the grill maybe?... the beam/read angle is always directly in front so it might work there

try mounting transponder to the sunroof glass (for those with sunroof)... gets it out of sight from the outside, doesn't obstruct any view and transmits perfectly (for me at least)...

Lightbulb Sheet Metal Piece Behind License Plate

I cut a small piece of sheet metal to mount it below my license plate. The sheet metal is placed unseen behind the license plate, with holes drilled for the screws. The windshield cutout only worked intermittently. 73.

Hmph. I have a new style transponder EZ Pass (New Jersey in the house!) and it works a charm in the cutout next to the rear view mirror.

EZ PASS PA, works every time.
I used a flashlight shining obliquely on the windshield from inside and could see a small cross hatched rectangle in the glass.
I hope this helps.

My car has windshield heating, if that has any impact on this discussion (the excerpt above suggests it might?).

How does the heating work? My sprinter van has tiny wires laminated in the glass.
Is it the same here?

No, there is some sort of transparent membrane in the glass. (God help me if I ever need to pay for a new windshield!) It turns on when the front defroster is on, and it worked a charm in an ice storm this winter.

My wife's last car was a Range Rover (then we had to get a minivan.....) and it had the wires. Drove me crazy because I kept focusing on the wires.

Yup! Funny, it didn't bother my wife at all. Very subjective, I guess.

I thought the idea of putting the thing on the sunroof was interesting. Here in Texas they say it should go in the upper windshield but seems the leading edge of the sunroof would also be very readable by the overhead cameras. I may ping the toll authority and ask them about it ...

The van drives me nuts at night, too.
The problem is looking at the headlights of oncoming traffic.
I describe it as a bad Lasik surgery job.

Exactly! My wife has a Pacifica which is exacerbated by having dangerously poor headlights. (The headlights on my car are phenomenal by comparison.)

A license plate mount in not an option for a HOT lane toll reader. It has a switch for 1, 2 or 3 occupants. Mine works in the lower opening at the center of the dash but not in the opening beside the mirror. The next time I go through the toll reader I will try the sun roof suggestion.

imo, if you ask the toll "authority" they will most likely defer to their officially accepted / recommended positioning... for me if it reads properly and doesn't block any view who cares where it is, i prefer the transponder out of sight, out of any view areas, easily applied, and 100% readable... so sunroof ftw for me.

The other thing is, at least here if the transponder doesnt read it takes a picture of your plate, and if your plate is registered with EZPass it just charges you same as it would have with the transponder. So, technically you dont even really need the transponder.

I dont run a front plate so plate mounting wouldnt work for me
