A Mercedes obviously!
Considerations on UK spec S350 Bluetec W222s

My father is considering a W222 S350 Bluetec as a second vehicle. For those who know the UK he lives in rural Derbyshire and since moving there has had 4WD options for the times it snows and it part due to pretty steep hills around him. The last Mercedes he owned was a W220 S500 when they very first came out (before he moved to his area) and had an Audi A8 4.2 TDI when he moved to the area. When he got rid of that he switched to an SUV but is now considering an additional sedan for longer trips and when he doesn't need the SUV.

It's been more than 15yrs since I shopped cars in the UK but frankly I was staggered how cheap some of these W222s are. For £25k or thereabouts ($33k USD) you can get a 2017 LWB S350 with less than 15,000 miles!?

In the UK due to the cost of fuel amongst other practicalities there isn't a huge demand for larger cars or those with larger engines and so I know that prices of larger sedans are heavily depressed but this stunned me, the cheapest W222s of this era and mileage in the US are north of $60k.

My understanding of the W222s were that they were very reliable vehicles and obviously the newer and the lower the mileage the better off you are. Is there anything I'm missing here?

Thanks in advance!

Those prices are indeed crazily cheap compared to the states! As for mileage, lower mileage usually is a good thing however some higher mile vehicles are very well taken care off. Furthermore, the W222 is indeed a very reliable car!
The main issues I've experienced/seen have been:
-Cracking rims (Usually occurs with the 20 inch Amg rims)
-Jerky Transmission (7 speed & 9 speed. Happens during downshifts during deceleration. It can be remedied by taking it to a dealer and asking them to manually adjust shift points. (There is a long thread on this issue)).

Options I recommend:
-Sport Appearance Package ($5,900 option that vastly improves the look of the car. Amg pedals are also included)
-Premium 1 Package (PO1 Package) Includes headed & cooled front seats along with a wonderful massage feature.
-Upgraded Interior Leather- I recommend this option if you plan on keeping the car a while. The upgraded leather quality tends to last longer.
-Driver Assistance Package- This package includes the Distronic plus (adaptive cruise) with steering assist feature. Compared to 2020-2021 systems, it's quite bad but it does make life a tad bit easier. I believe it also comes with lane-keep-assist.
-Surround View Camera- 360 Camera that makes parking extremely easy!
-Warmth & Comfort Package- This package provides heated & cooled seats to front & rear passengers. It also warms armrests (front & rear including the center console armrest). It warms washer fluid & front windshield too! (Package is only available with Power Rear Seats)

Options that are cool but not needed:
-Rear Seat Package- This option provides adjustable climate to rear seat passengers. Some have complained that without this option airflow to the rear is slow. (I don't see it as a big issue) It also comes with a rear footrest that extends from the front passenger seat. I've never used it.
-Heads Up Display- Self explanatory.
-Night View Assist Plus- A complete gimmick! I almost never use it unless I'm on a dark, twisty road; even then, it's quite useless.

Overall though, it's a great vehicle and for 33k USD, you cannot go wrong!

Hope this helps,
Sean
