My W222 does that clunk when it goes from 2nd to 1st very occasionally, going to live with it seems to be a normal thing.

I wouldn't say normal. Some people have it, some don't. We have no idea what the sample set is since online forums are a terrible gauge. My car has never done it.

My clunk is downshifting from usually 4th to 3rd or somewhere in there. With an automatic who really looks at the tranny automatically downshifting, but a few times I thought I was reaar ended it was so harsh. But as I stated the technican totally knew about the clunky tranny problem. Overall I love my S-Class, my first German car after many Japanese ones and this hopefully will not be an issue somewhere downt he road with the tranny exploding!
