Few questions,just picked up my 2018 S450

I just picked up my car the other day, and have been getting acquainted with her. Its an 18 with 35k, with some factory warranty left. I've noticed a few things that puzzle me, so I thought I would ask you fine people here if any of what I'm experiencing is normal? Or any quick fixes or I might be doing something wrong, or missing an option, as this is my first Mercedes.

1st issue: When I got the revs up past maybe 3 or 4k trying to get up to highway speeds, and I felt the car stumble, felt like a misfire. Check engine light came on, I went home and plugged into a scanner and came back with P0306 Misfire on cylinder 6. Shut the car off and turn back on it runs fine until I accelerate hard. Now I'm wondering since the dealer filled the car up with gas (Carvana, NOT a MB dealer) maybe they put 87 octane in it, and it requires 91 minimum. I'm hoping once I run this gas out and put some fresh 91 in , it will be better. I do have appt at the dealer , but that's not until Thursday.

2nd issue: Downshifts seem rather clunky, when going back to maybe 2nd and then down to 1st. Is this normal lol? I hope not.

3rd issue: Windshield washer fluid does not spray. I push the button in and the wipers cycle as if they're spraying , but no spray, and no spray motor sound that I can hear of. Weird.

4th issue: Android auto works but every time I touch my phone or cable it disconnects, it could be a faulty or not a quality cable, I will def try another cable and see if its better.

5th issue: Is when I use my android phone making phone calls. No one can hear me very well, and everyone keeps saying "What, What" LOL I found some settings where I could adjust the reception and transmission but that didn't seem to work.

Just wondering if there is any one has experience with any of these issues, while I wait to go to the dealer. I figure the more info I can arm myself with before I go to the dealer, the better I'll be.

Appreciate the help!

Chris

Hi there,

1. I would take it immediately back to the dealer. I would also have a trusted technician to have a look at it beforehand, just so I know if there are other potential future problem areas.
2. Definitely not. I do remember some members having reported something similar in other chats in this forum however.
3. Might sound dumb, but the washer button is a two-stop one. I had a dumbfounded expression when I discovered you could press it further before it would start putting out liquid.
4. Check that the port is not damaged as well, but yeah, the cable is the most probably cause
5. Is it possible that it's actually defaulting to your phone's microphone instead of the car's? I haven't really used Android Auto, ran it once, it felt very disappointing and haven't used it since.

Good luck with the car (do post a photo of it)!

Comment on the downshifting.

MB transmissions are not great. They are known for clunkiness. It’s variable and subjective. Not everyone experiences clunks and not everyone has the same tolerance for them. Search a recent thread by user Streamliner. Others on that thread said, “Yeah mine does that too, I thought it was normal.”

My 7G is clunky in certain situations. MB should not produce transmissions and rather let the people who know what they are doing at ZF and Aisin handle it.

Yup, She is definitely going to the dealer. I just filled up with 93 octane and no change once the car goes into boost.

I did noticed the washer button is 2 stage, when I hit the washer button I do hear the pump activate but nothing happens.

It actually could be the phones microphone picking up the call. This is when my phone is connected to the car via bluetooth, I have the problem. Never tried answering a call using android auto. I should and see if there is a change in quality.

Yup, that was the first thing I did lol. Then I had someone hit the button while I was upfront, as it wont let you use the wipers with the hood open, and I could hear the pump working but couldn't see what was happening.

Its not horrible, and it doesn't happen all the time. To me it is noticeable, probably because the rest of the driving experience is insanely smooth and comfortable.

Mine does a similar thing... There's nothing wrong with the transmission... Just typical Mercedes transmissions. Some are clunky, some aren't. I'd say it's close to a 50/50 ratio to those that are clunky and those that aren't. Anyways, I hope you enjoy your W222!

you know about magic vision wipers, right? the $ 200 wiper set that gets broken when not used too often? this is where the washer fluid is supposed to come out from, and gets pulled out immediatelly... and you will only see it for a brief moment, assuming the water pressure is not low...

there is no pump noise ;-)

I know about the magic wiper yes. I didn't know they break if not used. That would make sense as I think the car has been sitting for 3+ months. I didn't take the wipers off the stalks yet. I'll try that tomorrow and see if fluid comes out. Do you happen to know why they stop working with out use?

@Chrisnbig , just a theory here - dust or dirt, some residue in the washer fluid tank, old rubber, non-OE wiper blades... anything could be a reason. But since you have your car under warranty - just ask dealer to check it out as I can imagine this might become one of the most expensive things to address if wiper blades are OK...

Just S-class things...

I remember there is a setting in command to adjust microphone volume- I stumbled on it one day accidentally (I believe under phone settings). As far as the wipers- my SL450 also has "magic" wipers (dumb a$$ name) and I tried using them for the first time yesterday. Nothing happened for the first few tries and then finally they worked. Might just be a need to get the water up the blades if it's been sitting too long. You won't see spray, just the residual water on the windshield. My transmission is as smooth as I would hope for. Others like Stream had a smooth car, traded for another and had a harder downshift they tried fixing and now it's worse (if I'm remembering the sequence right). I believe you either have it or you don't and for the most part once you have it then it's yours to keep.

The magic part is how money "magically" disappears from your wallet when you replace them.

Unless you purchase the Chinese knockoffs, which work magically as well or better than the OEM for about $50/set with shipping.... if you purchase more than 1 set.

Aren't they included in the service?

Yup, I found those setting. I did play with them some, but it didn't seem to change anything. The people on the other end of the phone tell me that "the phone is cutting out". I'll mention this to the dealer as well. Maybe there is a comand update or some software update I'll need. I know my stupid BMW always has some sort of software update lol.

I held the washer button for a very long time and nothing every came out. These wipers look and sound dry tho, like they were never used. Gonna go out there and see if I can get one off.

Search Alibaba. Plenty of options on there. The ones I purchased on there work great and heat the wiper fluid like the OEM's.

Take it to a Mercedes Dealer, not back to Carvana.

Congrats on your 2018.
I also picked up a 2019 S450 CPO back in Feb.

1. I have never had that issue.
I drive my cars very hard and no check engine light
its actually very smooth even in high rpms.
I do fill up with 91 oct but tbh the 87 gas is not the issue. The car adjusts to the octane.
Have the dealer check it out for sure.

2. Mine rarely does that and it seems normal.
My previous W205 did that too...

3.Washer fluid on W222 is integrated into the blade so you won't see it spray unless you look real close.

4. Definitely cable issue I use AA as well

5. I have a S21 ultra and phone calls are crystal clear when I make calls through bluetooth or AA.
Talk to the dealer

Hope it helps.

Ok, so I finally got everything sorted in the car and thought I would report back.

1. The engine misfire was caused by a faulty injector, they replaced that and all the other injectors o-rings.

2. They told me the down shifts are normal, as I expected they would, I can live with it lol.

3. The wiper fluid wasn't dispensing because the screens in the bottle were plugged, they removed the bottle and cleaned the screen and bottle.

4. The AA they said was lack of having a data cable, I guess I had a charge only cable.

5. The phone call issue took a long time for them to figure out and get parts, 8 days. It turns out that it was a faulty mic in the headliner.

Thanks for all the tips! Everything seems fine now, other than I need new from brakes lol! That's no big deal.

Glad it worked out.
I had to teeth out some minor issues as well in the beginning.
Your car should be great for a while. I'm planning to get a two-year extension of my CPO warranty soon though.

I has my car at the dealer for the clunky tanny too, intially the service writer told me he had no idea but he promised to "throw everything at it". When I picked it up of course they said they couldn't replicate the problem, BUT the tech told the write to tell the customer that I was lucky he'd driven S-Class with "much worse downshift issues". So at this point I have it documented, i have 2 more years of warrant to go so I will see how things go.

I think it's just a characteristic of 9G Tronic. My 7G Tronic Plus on my previous car was way worse with downshifts it would jerk all the time.
My W222 does that clunk when it goes from 2nd to 1st very occasionally, going to live with it seems to be a normal thing.

Clunky? See attached bulletin that may or may not apply to your particular problem nevertheless, give process a shot.
