Fine Scratch Removal

My W222 has designo piano black lacquer interior trim. I am the second owner. The exterior body has no dings, not a scratch! I am discerning when it comes to that and I couldn’t find any imperfections. The interior is almost as good, save some fine scratches near the start button and the sliding cover in the rear console compartment between the two rear seats (I have the Executive Rear Seat Plus package).

Any suggestions on a product to use on piano black scratches? I think I read on here to use the same cleaner/scratch remover that you’d use on a black lacquer piano. Thoughts?

I do not know that you will remove them entirely, but I would start with the Novus 3-step system.

A little off-topic, but related. The guy who details my cars suggested that I apply the same kind of protective film he uses on the exterior to interior surfaces like the piano black cupholder cover to prevent them from scratching. I have a couple of scratches to remove from mine first, so I'm interested in what people here suggest for that.

To do it right you really need to use a small rotary or orbital polisher and pad and tape it off, etc. Doing it by hand you will almost always introduce more scratches trying to remove scratches.

Dremel makes a small circular buffer perfect for this. It comes with lock and loop pads that can be applied to the devices lock and loop pad. Be sure to use lite amounts of polishing creme and use towels everywhere nearby because it will sling the creme all over the place.

Yep, thats exactly the tool I was thinking of. You have to be really careful though because you can burn right through the urethane clearcoat with that.

Yes. I forgot to mention that. In addition, the pads are only about 2" in diameter.

Unless you have experience with motorized buffing, I wouldn't suggest starting with this type equipment. When doing such a job, always start with the least abrasive substance. I would start with regular car cleaner/polish and if not successful, begin using very fine compound. I would try it first in an inconspicuous area. You don't want to make it worse. After compounding, polishing will probably be necessary and regular car polish should bring the sheen back. Without experience, I wouldn't use a motorized tool. Just my 2 cents.

Jud, I agree with you it is best not to use a motorized buffer unless you are experienced with using it. But that raises the obvious question - how do those of us who do not have such experience gain the necessary experience? It's sort of a "you-can't-go-unless-you've-already-been" situation.

As they say, practice makes perfect. I would practice on something else first until you get the feel for it.

With a microfiber rag, Acetone or lacquer thiner can work great on clearcoat scratches. If not to deep, chemical will feather the scratch and it disappears.

TRY TEST AREA FIRST!

Me too...In fact there's a lot of suggestions in this thread that could do serious damage

Regarding the scratches, how fine are they? Can you feel them with your finger nail?

Ill add my observation. I have seen clearcoat scratches caused by jack handles etc disappear in seconds. Will it work in your application, I have no clue.

Test it first.

Also...don't be afraid to take it to a professional detailer and let them polish those out for you. They would probably do it for $150.

That's the best advice I've heard in this thread - yes, go to a pro. Better to risk a hundred or two to the detailer than to further damage that surface.
