Wind noise from Pano roof above 130mph

Anyone else notice that the wind noise makes a substantial jump when you go above around 130mph? I just picked up my new (to me) W222 S500 a few days ago and only today got around to hitting Vmax. The wind noise is of course normally very good in an S-Class and the same is true of this one except between 130mph and 155mph. At that speed it sounds more like a significantly lesser quality machine. The roof is closed of course. I notice that if I run my finger from the front of the roof over the point where the glass roof starts and it's probably a millimetre or two higher than the roof. Maybe at the high speed that's enough to cause that noise. I never got that on any other car. All others have been totally linear increase in wind noise in relation to the speed.

Thanks King Tiger, that does sound relevant. I really wasn't expecting an answer that would be relevant.

I'm gonna re-assess at what exact speed it starts and whether the hassle of getting it fixed corresponds to how often I'll drive at that speed (or higher) and how annoying the noise is.

this an interesting condition… my own AMG gives a surreal quietness when it gets above 130… which can happen in a flash if you mash it.. the quietness remains all the way to max…

defintely something to address

Unfortunately in Ireland if I was to reach that speed I would soon be arrested , the car confiscated , receive a driving ban and a prison sentence .

I thought this car was limited to 130 mph, how are you getting above it?

Traveled to Ireland just before Covid. Driving in Ireland was terrifying! LOL Narrow roads. Not many places I could imagine speeding. Adjusting to the other side of the road and the narrow roads was stressful. Beautiful country, wonderful people, great trip.

I added a video to Youtube of a quick run to Vmax I did yesterday. The dashcam is naturally on the windscreen/windshield and might be a bit isolated from hearing the noise but it can be heard with headphones.
For some strange reason the dashcam isn't receiving the GPS signal.

Although there are many roads in the US where a "quick" car can get up to speed in a short time and distance, doing it in the presence of other vehicles is NOT recommended. This video upsets me.

I have had my cars to vmax over the years on empty well paved straight roads and even that's risky and thusly done very rarely by me personally.

This video should probably be pulled down

but, I can tell you no such noise occurs on my amg..

Please be careful

I would have thought it's not recommended no matter how many cars are on the road. You'd go to jail if you got caught doing that in the US.

Not sure why. Twenty seconds before this clip I overtook a police car and a minute later an AMG went past us both at what looked like 190mph. Did you check my location?

You might can handle the speed but other drivers are never ready for you and hitting a deer or buzzard at that speed will get you on the Obit page. However, I get some German roads are designed for speed. It must be fun.

It's different here. It's normal. You learn to read the road and see potential for someone coming into your lane.

The wildlife here know the rules, autobahns are for cars. Seriously though, there are fences to keep the walking wildlife away.

It's just normal. Compare it to someone who only ever drives 30-40mph in town saying to you it must be fun driving at 85mph on an American freeway. Not really, it's just different. Same here. At points where it's not safe (about half of the entire Autobahn network) the speed limit is around 75mph. But the other half, where it is considered safe it's unrestricted. I showed this thread to my German brother-in-law who's a policeman. He couldn't understand why anyone would buy a car capable of 155mph if you're not going to do it occasionally.

Personally I exceed 130mph about once a month because usually the traffic isn't conducive to doing it and usually 110-130 is a nice cruising speed. You don't have that much of a delta to the slower drivers cruising at 80mph. On the rare occasions where I do exceed 130mph, it's typically not for more than a minute or two. I probably don't spend more than 15 minutes a year above 130mph - which is why I'm probably not going to get the issue related to this thread fixed. Not worth the hassle.

While I would have a major problem if this was in the US, (BTW there is a cop on this board who brags about doing it in Tennessee which I think is disgusting and a clear abuse of this position but what else is new) I have no problem with it in Germany.

Just because it's legal or accepted doesn't mean it's the right thing to do in my opinion....

This is perfectly legal...and if you look at his speed relative to the speed of other cars on the road, they're driving very quickly as well.

I see nothing in the video to be upset about.
Drivers in Germany are actually taught to use their rear view mirrors,
and also taught how to read the visual speed of cars rapidly approaching them from behind.

Would that it were over here........

Please don't be upset. Some of us live in europe, where these cars are designed and bulid, Here it is totally normal for "soccer-mom" to go 200kph (125mph) in the 2liter turbodiesel Skoda. In the presence of other cars.

You also have high levels of lane etiquette over there. You wont happen upon anybody standing still in the left lane, and people get out of your way as you approach quickly. People here just drive along oblivious to everybody else around them

@d4005 - what tires and psi do you run? I’m on ZY rated Michelins at about 34.
Thanks.
