Amazing experience - ILS+ (Intelligent Lights) in the US

Can someone confirm ... "intelligent lighting", meaning turning on and off portions of the LED cluster in response to driving conditions, is not approved by US DOT and therefore not enabled on any new car from the manufacturer, even if the required hardware and software are present.
What our cars come with from the factory are automatic high-beams (and possibly other features like lights moving when you turn the steering wheel), but the true ILS today can only be achieved by hacking the computers a la Benz Nina ... isn't that true?

Thanks for the feedback
My car's lights behave exactly as you describe, except there is no narrow to spread when turning on the high beams with the rotary switch. I just checked the window sticker and "Adaptive Highbeam Assist" is listed as included in the Safety/Securty section, looks like it was standard equipment.
I have a 2019 E450 with the Exterior Lighting package: With the stalk forward the A comes on next to the high beam indicator in the lower right of the dashboard. On my car the A means the intelligent lighting system is working: it automatically raises and lowers the high beam. Additionally as you turn the wheel the lights track: turn left lights move to the left: turn right lights move to the right. If the stalk is pulled back, the A goes out: the automatic raising and lowering of the high beam does not happen, you must do it manually.
Finally for the intelligent lighting system to work, the control for the headlights, the dial for the headlights must be set to auto.
When the high beams come on, the pattern starts in the middle and spreads out: pretty neat and I love to watch it work!
On my car the intelligent lighting system - adaptive high beam was a $800 option. Do not know if it was an option or standard on the 2017 S550.
Hope this helps!

Hi
I think you have what is standard ILS, which is normal to all S Class W222s i think
What we we have is ILS+ now
The first time you see the headlight beam indepedently track back and forth to find the curb, like someone has a spot light in hand
or the first time you see the headlights form a dark box around a vehicle in front while simultaneously lighting the road way past the vehicle on either side of it....and the dark box follows the vehicle to keep from dazzling it... you will know ILS+
the normal system as you describe is very nice
I dont recall the procedure, but there is definitive ILS+ activation in the menus.... not just the switches and buttons
Someone should be able to guide you to that menu to verify, it is NOT present with the ILS function, only with ILS+

Full intelligent lighting is now approved for new cars. You are correct that the hardware is present in older cars but as of this date the only way to activate it is to hack the system. There is a question if you hack the system and there is an general update it will reset the system to partial intelligent lighting.

Interesting, so this feature is now legal? Is it enabled on new cars, like if you went out and bought a 2023 S580 you'd get it? And even though it's legal now in US, Mercedes has made a marketing decision not to enable it on older models that already have the required hardware and software?

ILS Enabled
I FINALLY picked up my 2023 E53 two weeks ago. When I finalized the order the dealer told me that the car would have all of the LED lights, etc. required for ILS but Mercedes withdrew the ILS option (at that time) so it would not be enabled on my car. I took this with a grain of salt because, y'know, he's a salesman. Can you please tell me if ILS can be enabled on my vehicle and how can I check to see if it is already enabled or not?
My VIN is: W1K1J6BB3PF189274
TIA,

Assuming you have a normal set of options, are there any spare buttons to use?
I think my only open spot is that I don't have "Night Vision", but I don't think the blank cover moves like a switch.

BenzNinja implemented the ILS+ along with some other features on my 2019 S560 yesterday. I drove around last night and as others have said, it is amazing. If anyone here drives a lot in the dark, especially on poorly lit roads, you will love this option! BenzNinja rocks!

My ride is a 2014 S63 AMG
I really want to get the ILS+ installed as well as the updated map, traffic sign, and always start in S
Problem is I am 77 and don't do whatsup or Facetime. Just not an electronic techie
If I rent your package and take it it to my indie would that work ??
