Outside temperature rarely updates

Has anyone noticed that the outside temperature reading is very unreliable? Btw, this isn't just about my W222 it also applies to my previous S213, W221, S212, W212. All of my last 5 Mercedes cars have this thing where they don't seem to bother updating the dash's outside temperature reading. I can go into my underground garage, get in the car and it shows a temp or 20°C/68°F on a hot day where it's already 25°C/77°F outside (according to several sources) but the next half hour my car still shows 20°C/68°F. I can be out in the car for two hours, during which time my phone (via weather widget) and various temperature readings on buildings show that it's around 33°C/90°F but I'm still on 20°C/68°F. Then unexpectedly it'll show a more realistic temperature and change by half a degree every 10 minutes and then decide to stop changing again for an hour.

If it was just this car I'd think of asking the dealer to replace the sensor on the next service, but it's been the same on my previous 4 Mercedes. I know if this is the only thing I've got to complain about (and luckily it is) I should consider myself lucky (and I do)

My temp gauge doesn't act that way; it changes/updates as the outside air temp changes. Since your temp reading changes to the correct temperature at some point, perhaps it might be an issue with something upstream of the sensor. Good luck.

I can't say I've seen this on any of my cars. Certainly not on 5 cars in a row. Sounds like something is off. Anything common in the use of those vehicles? Particular car wash, dirt or mud that could cover/damage the sensor? The sensor is typically located low down in the front bumper near an air intake. In case of my AMG it's on the driver side and easy to spot. You can see that it could get damaged or covered fairly easily as it's totally exposed.

it's interesting you noticed that
MB doctors temp sensor data before displaying it. Software is involved to pick the previous temp until vehicle has moved at 20mph speed then dodplays actual.

Same thing with engine coolant temp, the data is massaged to look better than fluctuating up/down with cooling fan etc
Worry not!

Yeah that's standard debounce logic, I've implemented such a strategy many times in software. But when you *are* driving between 0 and 40mph a whole bunch and you know that it's a really hot day and the temperature is rising and rising and you've been driving for 2 hours since around 10:30am, you know for a fact it's not the same temperature it was 2 hours ago. The weather widget on my phone's home screen has shown the temp has risen 10 degrees at least and those buildings that show the temp outside have risen the same amount. Meanwhile my car thinks nothing's happened. Then out of nowhere it'll jump those 10 degrees and be correct. I definitely blame the software rather than the sensor being blocked because it does get it right eventually.
