Transmission a little clunky

I have noticed the transmission in my W222 2015 is a little clunky especially driving in the city stop and go or going uphill/downhill. It also does it when your driving and lets say someone in front of you is turning you slow down and then speed back up sometimes it will do it then. It feels as if it doesn't know what gear to be in and then you feel a little clunk. I only drive in comfort mode. On the highway its totally fine.

I do know the PO drove on the highway only. The trans service was done 15k miles ago. While I was buying this car at the MB dealer they had a 14 there which I test drove that was doing it way worse. They told me its common on these model years with the 7 speed trans.

I was wondering if I should reset adaptions as its a new to me car, or do another transmission service? My shop suggested doing some software updates and also said its a "known" issue on 2014-2017 models.

Came across this thread as well https://mbworld.org/forums/s-class-w...ting-w222.html

Appreciate any feedback/thoughts

Independent is correct. Without knowing how long ago you purchased I suggest having the MB dealer you purchased from clear any/all stored codes if any and do an Xentry (MB diagnostics) quick test to pull any existing codes, and both transmission and engine control software should be checked for updates + Xentry transmission adaptation.

7G and 9G boxes are clunky. That’s how MB designed them. They are dependent on fluid changes. Change the fluid if it hasn’t been done in 30k miles.

Resetting adaptations (do you have XENTRY?) seems risky.

My car has the same behavior but improved a little after I had the big transmission service (fluid, filter, etc.) done. It's at a level now I can live with but shame they couldn't have made a smoother tranny for such an otherwise lovely car.

I haven't checked over at the W223 forum but would think they have the same thing on the newest models too.

Is it the 5-4 downshift? That is usually the one that clunks for owners. Unfortunately I have no found anything that made it better (I did a flush, software update).

My '16 S550 C4 had an abrupt D5 to D4 shift and occasionally D4 to D3. I had the dealer do a software update that was available from a maintenance campaign (not a recall) and the transmission has worked much smoother since then. You might ask your dealer to check for the new software. Good luck!

My 2018 S450 is fairly smooth. Coming off the freeway to a stop I get a clunky 3-2. I read that it’s sill a problem thru 2021 S model. My 2014 E 350 7speed was as smooth as silk. Never had any clunking.

Unfortunately I did the most recent update as of 7/2021 and it had minimal improvement. It’s one of the few things I consider a mechanical fault of the w222.

The W223s do indeed have the same issue though it seems to be a rarer occurrence. It's really disappointing when the rest of the car is so polished.

My S550e has the same issues, I had flush done and all software updates and it made a small difference and it doesn't happen all the time, but there are times especially comign off freeway where it clunks hard. I had 1 or 2 times where I almost thought I was rear ended before they did software update and flush, now I never it it that bad but still pisses me off. I wish MB woudl stop making tranny's and use a 3rd party like many others do for their highest end cars.
