Automatic Rear Sunshade??

I just bought a 2017 S550 4-Matic, and I assumed the rear sunshade would automatically lower when putting the car in reverse, and go up again when I shift back to drive. It doesn't go up and down automatically in my car. Is it supposed to?

I've owned a Hyundai Equus (Genesis G90) for several years, I'm actually trying to sell it right now. The rear sunshade goes down when I place the car in reverse and goes back up automatically, I just assumed the same would be truye for the MB.

Rear sunshade does not go down when in reverse. I actually did hate that feature in BMW.

That's what backup cameras are for. If you want visual confirmation, just use the side mirrors. In summer, I leave my rear curtains pulled and use the side mirrors exclusively. It can be done.

While it can be done, and I've been doing it this way since I bought the car - it would be much nicer if the shade retracted automatically. This is a bigger problem for me in low light situations. With the lighting at my house, there's too much glare to rely on the backup camera. And the driveway slopes down to the front of the garage so it's not the easiest manuever to pull off. Maybe the Ninja can work on some coding to make this happen.

Thanks for confirming that my car isn;t defective.

I have not seen this as a problem nor have I felt like rear sun shade should go down because it doesn't make it difficult to see when reversing .Tint of the shade is brilliant, it provides privacy yet not obscure the view from inside .
However, your replies makes me think that there should have been an option to choose when the driver selects the gear it should go down as well

You haven't had a car where it does go down in reverse. Once you've had a car that does that, it just makes sense for it to do that for safety reasons.

The shade absolutely obscures the view from the inside...

Personal opinion here, but in this car, I've never, not once looked through the back window directly, because the view is too restricted. I find it easier to use the 360 camera and the side mirrors to park/unpark, rather than twist and try to look through the rear window. Takes less effort to switch one's view and you cover more ground that way!

For me, even though I use the cameras, I just feel much more comfortable being able to see out the window also.

On the new W223, the rear sunshade automatically retracts when the car is in reverse. I don't like that feature enough to buy a newer car, but I wish my 2017 W222 had that feature.

Unnecessary wear and tear on the shade and motor. Sometimes you hit reveres for just a second, by the time the shade is rolling down, its on its way back up 2 Cents... Think about how many times that motor has to run partial way....

Ive had many cars with automatic retracting shades in reverse and have never had an issue. My old 2003 ES300 has this and the car has 220,000 miles on it and the shade works perfectly.

Interesting discussion ... I use my rear shade seasonally, during the hot Texas summer and not in milder times like now. If W222 had a setting for automatic shade deployment, I'd likely have it off right now.

The feature we're talking about is not automatic deployment, its automatic retraction when the shade is up and you put the vehicle in reverse, then once you put it in drive or park it will come back up.

Think about how many times the motor for the front and rear camers open and close, and they're exposed to the elements. I had a rear sunshade in my 2001 S600 and never had a problem with it. It wasn;t automatic, but I used it VERY often, even just to show people the novelty of it back then. My 2011 Jaguar had an automatic sunshade, as have many cars since, and they seem to be very reliable. So glad they put it in the W223, probably based on customer input.
