Has anybody installed a heated steering wheel in their car

I just bought my car in November 2017 S550 4-Matic. Main reasons I bought it is that It was beautiful, has the CPO warranty, and I just wanted to end my search. I love the look of the car and it rides and drives like a deam.

I'd like to buy a used heated steering wheel and clock spring with the heated steering wheel switch. Does anybody think this will work, or are there other things needed? Maybe a module or some type of programming, anything? I wish I knew somebody who did this before, but I suspect you guys are smarter and more patient than me...LOL. All help and information appreciated.

The main issue here is that the heating only applies to the leather in the S550 (or any pre-FL w222). Most owners with this wheel claim it is a waste and barely palpable.

I am sure you could retrofit it, but you will likely need coding as well.

On the other hand the post-FL W222 (S560) heats the entire wheel and it is a much better convenience.

I find the heated wheel in my 222 S65 to be as toasty as I wish for. Glad to have it on cool mornings.

The heated wheel
in my s560 with wood is pretty nice.
they figured that one out.
NOTHING beats the 2019 Chevy suburban heated wheel, you can put a bagel on it.
toasty!

I saw somewhere else on the forum that possibly coding wasn't necessary, but it wasn't confirmed one way or the other. Has anybody ever did this before with just the heated steering wheel and the clock spring? I bought a used clock spring on the Bay, and I can get a used heated steering wheel for $250. I might start by seeing if this works, then upgrade to the 2018+ steering wheel or an AMG wheel. I like the feel of leather more than I like the look of the wood.

My nickel in a bet says you will also need the switch that turns on the heated wheel. It is incorporated in the switch that does tilt/telescope of the wheel with a red LED in the end of it that lights up when activated. I’d like to think that wiring to it is already there but have not verified.

Most OEM method would be Steering Wheel + Steering Column retrofit and then vedock/vediamo coding to get the functions working. Ask your dealer to check the schema so you can see which components are involved. If you don't want to do that and not do any coding you'll need to speak to an Eastern European company that make the retrofitting modules, I think in America you can call euroactiveparts who act as a seller for some of them. Make sure you ask how it works for the heated element as it's in the column for the facelift and on a stalk for pre facelift.
Edit: Also speak to CKMCarDesign and ask if their module uses the current stalk for heated element. If so, just follow his s63 YouTube video.

You're definitely right about that. I bought a new clock spring/steering column cover that has the correct switch. Also buying the steering wheel to see if that does it. Then I'll move on to coding if it doesn't work. Once i get that figured out I'll buy the nice thick steering wheel that has heat all the way around, possibly an AMG wheel.

Thanks for the tip. I saw SKM do some things but didn;t realize heated steering wheel upgrade was one. I'll check it out.

Spoke with Justin at Euroactive. They sell OEM brnd new parts, and have a connection with a guy who codes. But their guy who codes will only do it with a parts purchase. Their quoted price for the steering wheel upgrade was close to $4K. That's a little steep for me so I'll continue to search for help.

Anybody else know someone who can do the coding, and/or if coding is necessary?

Seems like a good question for Peter.... AKA Benzninja.
