New 222 owner…looking forward to being back in a Benz!
Hey all,
it’s been years since my last Benz (06 e500 4matic) and have been shopping for a few months now. Bounced around between cls550, cls450, cls63, even considering e53 or m550i at times. Eventually I went and drove a few and as expected the s550 won me over.
This week I’ll be picking up my new-to-me 2017 s550 4matic with only 12k original miles on it. I’m overpaying a bit, and it’s not cpo, but it is by far the finest car I’ve driven in a long time. Black on nut brown, amg sport package, exclusive package, warmth and comfort package, premium and driver assist packages also.
One interesting thing on the CARFAX, it apparently failed emissions in ny state at like a 4 digit mileage. Anyone seen that before and if so what was the cause?
I’ve been doing some research on here, looking for common issues and such but haven’t seen much of anything that scares me. I DIY most everything I can on my vehicles, so I plan on checking the usual suspects in the cam sensors/magnets etc. do these leaks tend to be more time or age related?
im planning on a tune at some point. Are the turbo cooling lines DIY-able? I know the e’s and CLSs had intercollegiate pump issues early on, do these cars suffer from that?
im sure I’ll come up with more questions as time goes on, but happy to be back in a Mercedes again and look forward to contributing! Enough talk, here are the pics. Not certain what the thought process was behind a previous owner painting the calipers…gonna have to do something about that.
Nice color combo! I have the 'nut job' interior too and it's such a nice change from that dreary beige most W222's came with ...
The emission issue could be almost anything, getting the codes would be the logical starting place.
Yeah light beige in any form was a no go for me.
it went through a couple more inspections after that one and across another owner despite the low mileage so whatever it was must have been taken care of.
The failure of a NY inspection could be because someone reset the codes or the battery was replaced. It causes the emission system to go into a non readiness state.
OP, what kind of tires do you have front and rear? The picture shows 'Cinturato P7' but I didn't think Pirelli made this tire in the size our rear wheels require ...

They are all P7s, I didn’t check date codes but I’d bet they’re fairly old.
fronts are apparently 245/45/19, rears are 275/40/19. At least according to tire rack, those are correct sizes.
they won’t be on for long. I’m not a fan of pirellis on anything and will likely go for Michelins or continentals to replace them.

this is probably the most likely scenario, as I can’t imagine anything happening in that short of a time period to something like an o2 sensor or the like.
It does make me a bit concerned for the oil in the harness problem but no lights were present on test drive. I’ll just be planning to do the sensors, magnets and pigtails for some cheap insurance
