hard to line up radar detector with windshield cut out

hello all on my 2019 w222/s560 there is two windshield cut out's where you can put a gps transponder/radar/anything else.
The one at the bottom next to the auto windshield wiper sensor, is too low and i cannot get my radar detector angle correct to be able to look straight thru the cut out and also look straight onto the road. the only way i can make it look is pointed downwards but then it it looking at the hood and there isnt any soace to tilt the other way since the dash area is in the way of my radar

the only other spot is passenger side near the pushdown makeup mirror thingy, but over there the headliner is too thick at the spot where the cut out is so if i try to position my radar detector and mount it so it looks thru the cut out, it ends up hitting the headliner and makes it impossible to look straight.
the radar detector should have a str8 line up sight thru the windshield and it is so hard for me to place my radar so that is possible

anyone have a work around? my unit is even a small one its just a uniden r3 so it is really compact

thx!

Have the same problem as you, i want to use the radar in another car because i feel as if the range is very limited due to the windshield.

If you can't mount it in the clear spot of the windshield then your only other option are remote mounted radar detectors, which will allow you to mount the antenna within the grill. They are also known as concealed radar detectors.

I use the lower spot for my radar detector but I had to adjust the angle of the mounting bracket to get the correct position. With the bracket properly adjusted, the detector is just above the glare shield and looks straight out over the engine hood. If your bracket is metal, as mine is, it would be easy to bend it to the correct angle. Good luck.

Im running an R3 mounted at the dashboard, fuse tapped into the drivers side dash panel and ran the wire along the bottom of the windshield and dash. I used a dual suction mount and bent it with some pliers so the angle is leveled pointing forward. Works great with no issues, personally tested with police lidar & Ka.

FYI - not sure if it matters for Ka, and this is not scientific.

I have a friend who has a Netradar DSP install, and the front radar head has zero obstructions, i.e., best possible exterior position.

They were traveling with an Uniden R8 so mounted it dead center in the windshield (not in either cut out) to see how badly the windshield impacted range. They do not have the heated windshield option.

Over about 10 Ka hits during a long east coast drive, the R8 alerted anywhere from a split second to 2 seconds later than the NR. The R8 never alerted first, but the NR had about 5 feet and zero obstruction advantage.

Even with the R8, the alert was so far out that there was more than enough time to reduce speed.

On K, though, the R8 had almost no K alerts at all, which seemed odd. None of the K alerts were police, so they cannot say if the silence is because the R8 is newer/better at filtering K than the NR, which people say is effectively an Uniden R3.

thinking about 18 s550
seeking any additional input on your radar usage through the cut out. i'm considering a 16 s550 and use a uniden r7 extensively as im a very spirited driver.

edit: read more about the parking sensors and distronic messing with the signal. even if thats true, if i never use distronic then those sensors wont set off the R7 , correct? i realize every time i put it in R to park in the garage etc it may signal but i could deal with that. just curious if there are more sensors id have to worry about with the radar detector

I have my r3 hardwired and mounted at the center/dash cutout (photo in previous post above), bent the suction mount slightly and it works with no issues. I haven't had any hits with sensors; parking sensors arent active at driving speeds and im pretty sure they are handled by the K filter.

I have my V1's next to the rear view mirror without issue in both cars.. the range may be reduced but easily good enough, as the bogies are always way down the road.... no "too close" instant-on in many years... knock on wood

My solu tion is simple.

A long time ago, I used used a detector. - then, I just starrted driving within the allowed speed limits. No worries.

I have an Escort Redline just below my rearview mirror. Turns out the GPS can see just fine. And the range hasn’t been a problem. I have the same two cutouts as well, but didn’t need to use them.

I hear ya..., i have a Little different take

In Houston and much MUCH more relevant in LA, people drive 25 mph over the limit on the interstates
If you get in the right lane and drive at posted you will get shot at

So i drive with slow traffic ( still fast enough to get a ticket) and slow down when the detector says so ...for a few seconds... i consider it removing myself from russian roulette ticketing

So the detector keeps me from being RAGED AT....

Houston is much more manageable in this regard
