Warranty question

For those of you who don’t know my story, I had a new 2020 S560 that developed a harsh 3-2 downshift. MBUSA said they could not fix it and bought the car back from me, when it was about 18 months old with about 12K miles.

I am now looking at a used 2020 S560, that I might purchase from the original owner. The car has well below the 50K mileage limit of the original factory warranty and about another year of coverage left. IF I should experience any sort of major issue, such as the transmission developing a harsh shifting issue, would MBUSA treat me the same as the original owner, or is there fine print that says something to the effect that secondary owners are treated differently?

I would appreciate all constructive comments, ESPECIALLY if you have had first hand experience with original factory warranty coverage as a secondary owner. Thanks!

I have experience being the second owner of several cars. Yes, the warranty is the same for you as it was the original owner. It follows the car not the driver. What IS different is extended/CPO warranties. The coverage changes.

Have the seller buy (if you’re interested) the extension on the factory warranty. They can extend it 7 years/100k miles from the original in service date, but only the first owner can do this. I believe that extension transfers to future owners as well.

I checked my extended warranty (7yrs/75000) and it is transferrable. The only limits mentioned in the "Transfer" section are that the secondary purchaser must be able to provide proof of ownership and a copy of the agreement. The warranty cannot be transferred to a different vehicle, just to a secondary purchaser.

Thanks for that. Do you happen to know if the second owner can then sell the car to a third and if the warranty continues to stay in effect?

I looked into this and it doesn’t matter if the original owner purchases the extended warranty before I buy the car, or if I purchase the warranty after I buy the car. As long as the car is still under the original factory warranty, it’s all the same.

The only time you cannot extend the factory MB warranty while still under the original warranty is if the car is sold to another non mercedes dealer or broker and then purchased. The original factory warranty is treated the same regardless of ownership but you cannot extend the factory warranty if the car is sold to a non MB dealer and then sold again.

If a car under warranty is sold to another owner by the MBZ dealer, the dealer can CPO the car. (You as a consumer can't do that). However, as mentioned earlier, as long as the car is still covered under the factory warranty, the owner of the car can purchase MBZ' extended warranty (Its called ELW). When I purchased my 2020 S560 out of my lease, I had the option to have the dealer either CPO it for me and then resell it to me or sell it to me with the ELW extended warranty. It was cheaper and had better coverage to get the ELW. Apparently, the ELW covers more that the CPO does. (I don't remember the exact details, but the service adviser confirmed it as well) I Hope this helps

If you find the right seller (of the ELW), you can get around this. I bought my S450 from a VW dealer, and I now have a MBZ ELW on it, none of my local dealers would even try to do it, as I didn't buy it from a MBZ dealer. But there are some people who are willing to do it, and don't see it as an issue. Also, you can shop around for an ELW and get different pricing.
