Is Auxiliary Water pump always running?

Is Auxiliary Water pump always running?
I don't have an issue with mine, but I'm wondering if the auxiliary water pump is always running, or does it kick on when you're car is doing stop/start at a traffic light/stop sign? The 7 Series always had the Electric Waterpumps fail on their later cars, but I don't seem to see any S-Class car owners reporting this type of issue.

I find that the charge air system ends up hot soaked after sitting a while with the engine at operating temperature. Can’t miss the lack of performance as ME pulls boost to keep things safe until enough time has passed at speed to get all that heat out. I intend to do a naughty bypass of the relay such that the charge cooling pump runs anytime the engine runs + additional heat exchanger in front of the stack and likely another pump to really get things moving.
