Rear-left sun shade's been vandalized

Hello everyone,
This sunday night, my rear window's been broken (the rear-left quarter one).
Thankfully there was nothing in the car and the thief could not open it so I have not lost anything.

The window is covered by the insurance but not the small part of the sunshade. I always leave the sunshade up so that it "tints" the rear windows.
The thief completely destroyed the sun-shade part of the quarter glass.

Do you have any idea how to repair it ? Will I have to change the whole assembly ?

Just curious if your vehicle has the laminated acoustic glass package?

Why wouldn’t the insurance company cover the shade? I would fight them on that

Hi, they actually can cover it but we have something called a "franchise" in french.
I don't know if it's the same in other countries but you have to pay the insurance a certain amount of the repair.

For exemple, vandalism is covered but I have to pay 950 euros first, and then the insurance pays the rest.
So if the actual repair is, let's say 800 euros, there's no point in using the insurance for that as I'll pay 800
But if the repair is 2900 euros, I'll pay 950 and the insurance will pay the rest.
I'm already paying 2k/year for the insurance, it's quite sad.

However, the broken window is fully covered, I don't have to pay anything.

It appears that your vehicle does not have the acoustic glass package after checking MB.vin. If you ever get another vehicle, you should consider the acoustic/IR glass package which uses laminated glass that is harder to break through for these these vandals/thieves. Sorry to hear about your window.

Sure sure the slightly more resistant glass would have made the difference.
Tell us more about the savior laminated glass
Maybe with some ceramic coating
Or with a small placard for the thieves saying please no....

Sure. It's a laminate layer sandwiched between two sheets of glass. It really holds the glass together really well in the event of a fracture. It also blocks infrared and reduces road noise into the vehicle. Yes you can apply ceramic coating to it as well. It won't make it stronger but it'll make it a lot easier to clean! A small placard could be added saying that you have laminated glass and they might skip an attempt at breaking in but I wouldn't rely on it.

I think replacing the glass to laminated one could make some difference

Yes. It was standard equipment on all W222s, in the U.S.

I have replaced two of these due to malfunction (one in my previous W221) and they are not happy about being fiddled with, so I would doubt you could repair one that has been damaged. Not impossible perhaps, but perhaps not worth the time.

From your VIN the the part number is: 22281065029107 with the final 9107 indicating the color of the shade. (black or shwarz)

Best place I've found to keep the costs down is eBay. This search is for the general part number minus the color code, but you should be able to tell from the photos if the color is suitable for your application.

Hello everyone thanks for your kind answers.
I replaced the windows this friday. It cost me 399.95€ (the part was 180€, the rest is labour), thankfully the insurance covered it all.

Regarding the sun shade, I don't think i'll replace it but thanks for your pieces of advice. I rarely have people sitting in the rear left seat haha

The laminated windows option is quite interesting. Unfortunately my car does not seem to be equipped with that, I'll live without it

My next S class will probably be a facelift S560 or even S63 so it'll probably have this option as standard.

Have a good day everyone

If you live and park in areas with these issues quite often, 3M makes a security film that can be applied like tint but even basic tint will help a little bit better and you can at least get IR filtering with tint.

Is it really "safety" glass? Years ago I did look around for a bullet proof Mercedes-Benz but I never bought one.

I could only find one VIN decoder (this one) that works with my VIN number. W1KUG8GB9LA562664 The results are a bit more generic that I would expect. It shows Laminated glass but not Safety Glass. Is there a better one? I tried the same ones I've tried with other vehicles.

I was really excited about the DRIVERS FOOT REST until I realized it's probably just that little hump next to the pedals. I thought it odd that a driver would have a foot rest.

The bulletproof Maybachs are only sold in select countries like India, Brazil, etc.

How about other parts of Latin America? I have kind of thought about retiring to Latin America either with my MB or buying another one. Chile, Uruguay, Mexico. Bullet proof glass might come in handy. The other day a homeless guy asked me for a quarter so I need the protection! My husband says people would just think I was a drug dealer. I never saw myself living in a gated community but unless I'm driving a Toyota Corolla, it might be a requirement. No one bothers my MB in the USA.

Chile is very safe, safer than the US. Not sure about Uruguay but I've never heard of any issues there. I think we all know enough about Mexico, particularly the border towns and Cartel areas.
