New Owner - Trunk Issue

Picked up a '14 S550 and have an issue with the trunk that I haven't found an answer to.

The trunk pops open from the remote, door switch and trunk switch but will not fully open and has to be lifted open. Will not close with the buttons and both buttons are lit.

When I close it, it does fully latch on its own.

Checked fuses 401 and 491 and both are good. Trunk set to open fully on dash and valet switch in glove box set properly.

Where do I look next??

Thanks!

I wondering if this is your problem. This is from the 2019 S560 owners manual. Hope it is the same on your car.

Activating/deactivating the trunk lid opening height restriction
Multimedia system/Vehicle /Vehicle Settings/Trunk Lid Restriction
Activate or Deactivate the function.

This function allows you to avoid bumping the trunk lid on a low garage ceiling,

Thanks for the reply but I have adjusted the trunk height setting on and off and neither setting makes a difference.

The unlatch and latch function works but power up and power down do not. I believe I need to check the fuse and circuit for the up/down function but haven't had time to check it out today.

Thanks again!

From your description it seems there is an issue in the auto close module, likely a sensor. Best route to get it diagnosed.

Thanks for the reply. If there are any scan tools available to purchase, I would like to do that as the nearest dealership is 175 miles from home.

I'll need to visit the dealership sometime anyways as I need a second key but having diagnostic capability at home would be nice as I'm sure there are many issues that pop up that could be fixed at home.

Thanks again!

I bought a thinkdiag off Amazon for about $100 and posted about it here, that is the cheapest most capable diagnostics device I've used fist hand.

I too bought a Thinkdiag. Be sure to only use it on an Android phone tho. It is a good tool for reading codes and looking at data. The plus is coding variations. (For those who know what they are doing). Great device for OP's situation.

Did a bit of troubleshooting today to see if the motor will actually raise and lower the trunk lid. After removing the trunk interior trim, I checked all of the connections to the trunk motor and control module and all were good. Checking for power from the control module to the motor came up empty.... With a volt meter connected to the power output of the module, there is no voltage when the trunk lid open button or down button is pressed. If I apply power directly to the motor, I can raise the trunk lid and reversing the power lowers the lid so the motor itself is working.

I checked the connections to the open and close switches and everything is nice and tight so I believe I may have a bad trunk lid control module. I still need to order the Thinkdiag tool but wanted to ask if this tool will be able to diagnose this module and the inputs leading to it.

Thanks!

It should, I have not looked in that module but the device does have sensor data.
It's from Amazon so if it doesn't work you can send it back.

Received the ThinkDiag today and scanned the car.

The trunk has a code of B224E55 - the trunk lid/tailgate control has a malfunction. The component is not configured.

on Measurements and Switching Thresholds, the normalization of tailgate shows not normalized.

Hmm looks like someone replaced something back there.
Is there a teach in actuation in the thinkdiag?

I'll check but don't recall noticing a teach function.

I found a video with the code where the tech fixes what appears to be the same issue I have and he does it all with the Xentry(?) Software. Unfortunately the video is in Arabic and my Arabic is non-existent.

Also what happens if you hold the in car trunk switch to open and hold to close?

It just pops open but does not raise. Holding the button in the close position does nothing.

The opening of the trunk does not seem to be signaling the power actuator to raise to the fully open position.

Yes the control module is saying it does not have the information of the movement of the trunk, that is the normalization.
This would happen when a module or motor is replaced or defective.
You can peform the normalization with xentry but if there is an issue (e.g worn hardware) the control unit will again fault and ask for normalization.

I have an appointment next month to have a key programmed and will schedule trunk diagnosis at the same time. I may still do some troubleshooting on my own to see if I can come up with anything. I did find out that the trunk height sensor is part of the motor and is the connector with the 3 wires (green, white and brown) and will check those wires when time allows. I do know that the other 2 wires going to the motor (red and black) do not have voltage at the module. If I supply voltage to them (12 volts), the trunk closes but it does so in a hurry rather than slowly so I "think" that the height sensor regulates that voltage down to 4.5 volts before it gets to the motor. I could be wrong but also may test that theory with three D-size batteries.

After reading, I have to assume that if the module itself is bad and I need to replace it that it's not just as simple as removing the old one and installing the new one. The new one will have to be programmed in order to work with the car and if that's the case, I'll have the stealership tell me what's wrong before buying parts.

I took it to the dealer and they programmed it. Was roughly $200 and it works like it should now

Yeah, I saw your comment about an Arab spoken video so I just watched it (I don’t understand Arabic) and it appears he coded so I was hoping it’s something that can be fixed through Xentry. Thanks for your help!

I'm sure BenzNinja or Elebest can code it online but the dealer was easiest for me.

One of these days I'll do the ILS upgrade through one of them.
