Battery Question S450

When recently in for service, the dealer said my battery needed to be replaced. I told them I would do it myself.
In my other cars I have always found an aftermarket battery which was a proper match.
For my 2018 S450 it doesn't appear there is a direct replacement available.
The battery installed in my car is A000 982 18 08
Has anyone else found a good replacement? I normally like to use the Duracell Platinum AGM batteries, but I'm open to others as well.

Thanks
Tom

H8 battery size is fairly common. Different manufacturers spec different AHrs and CCAs, but if you go with the same OE specs or higher, you're fine.

Going from memory, I think Mercedes might have changed to the H9 size for the S560 series. I looked it up and see the following ...

"The H9 battery is another group size designation for automotive batteries. It is larger than the H8 battery, with dimensions of around 15 x 7 x 7.5 inches (L x W x H). H9 batteries are used in heavy-duty vehicles and vehicles with high electrical demands, providing ample cranking power and capacity".

I checked one H9 and it shows a weight of 69 lbs! You can skip a trip to the gym on the day you change this monster!

I knew the H9 was a bit larger, but 69 lbs would require an engine hoist! The H8 weighs in at about 58 lbs, and it was all I could do to move it.

Hello Tom you think that same battery would work in the 2018 s450 model without having to reprogram

Suggest you check the battery in the car to verify the correct size. It's possible Mercedes used a little different battery for the 450 model.

The programming part is a little trickier. There is a procedure to tell the computer you have a new battery installed. Apparently this helps the car optimize the charging function. I skipped this step, assuming that the electronics are smart enough to adapt to a different battery, with only potential issue being shorter battery life.

Since it would cost about the same amount as the new battery to have someone reset the computer, I decided to take that chance. So far - coming up on two years - no signs of trouble skipping the reset.

The OE H8 battery in my G550 died after 42 months. I replaced it with a Duralast Platinum H8 having the same specs, and did not register it. It's been fine for 18 months. I think this registration thing is mostly a gimmick that gives dealers a chance to charge another $150 for an already overpriced battery and installation fee. My Duralast cost $240. I can buy another and still come out ahead of what a dealer would have charged.

I have the tools and don't bother with the reset on neither MB or Porsche. Sometimes I tell my self I'll do it but then just forget, no noticeable issues on battery life.

Thanks everyone. I do have the ability to reset the battery, so I'm not worried about that. I'll probably do it just to be complete.
