Replacement key for an S560

Has anyone had to buy a replacement key for an '18 - '20 S560? I think this has been mentioned before and there are two parts ... one, buying the key itself which I think goes for about $600 from the dealer, and then paying to have it programmed, which only a dealer can do?

Just looking for the sure-thing price to use in negotiating on a car that has only one key (and the seller says he won't get one as part of the deal)

Most dealers you can walk away with a programmed key for about $600 but if negotiating would call it $750.

I recommended calling multiple Dealers, price varies upto 33% by Dealer/region
Also, specialized locksmith is a option, price is around $275

Tell the seller "no 2nd key fob no deal". He forgot where he left it, he should replace it.

There is no "locksmith"option the keys are comming programmed by the VIN number from Germany!
You have to order the key, the dealer will call you when they have it ( you have to pay in advance) and then you have to prove the car is yours.
That is how I got it for my previous CL600 ( the selling dealer paid for it !)

Incorrect
a locksmith disconnects your ignition switch, then reads it
then makes the key

Back to this question ... sound like the risk factor is if you have only one key and lose it, then you might have a long wait to get one VIN-coded and sent from Germany? There are some offered on EBay with the mysterious 'professional locksmith' recommended.

Benz Ninja, what exactly do you mean the locksmith 'disconnects the ignition switch'?

I've not heard of anyone doing FSB4 keys around here but I'm not in the car business. Do you have anyone you can refer? This would be big news as it used to be dealer only which kept keys expensive but also reduced theft.

Just checked with my wonderfully helpful local dealer ... they said you have to schedule a service appt, bring the car in for some unspecified checks, and then they would order the key from MBZ.

When It comes in, another process to program it ... she said expect to pay around $2,000 end to end for this.

My dealer quoted $400 for the key and $250 for programming. Have to provide proof of ownership and possibly leave a kidney for them to order the spare.

No aftermarket tool can program DAS4 keys. At the dealership, a handful of technicians can add a key if one original key exists. If all keys lost situation, then an XSF case has to be made with MBUSA and once approved a pre-programmed key can be ordered. Again, THERE IS NO AFTERMARKET TOOL that can program DAS4 keys, yet. Very few independent shops, like me, can order DAS4 keys because you need to own an Xentry Kit 4 and be licensed through the National Automotive Safety Taskforce. Other than that, there is no other way. As far as pricing goes, it can go from $1000 to $2000. It all depends on how hungry the dealership is.

2018 GLS550 & 2015 S550 gone but not forgotten: 2001 S500, 2006 ML500, 2010 S550 & 2014 GL550
Call all the dealers in your area. Also check their online site. The online site will be a lot cheaper. I just picked up a 18 GL550 that only had one key. I'm in the D.C. area so there are about 12 dealers that I was willing to go to. One of them had the key listed online for $300. When I called directly the key was about $550. Most times they will price match their online site, but the keys can not be purchased online, due to needing to verify ownership. The parts manager did meet me in the middle and sold me the key for $400, which is their cost, so he said. You can call around and find the key one dealer, and have it programmed at another. Find which one will give you the best price the key, then take it to the dealership that will give you the best price to program it. I haven't found a where the parts department at the dealership will price match other dealerships. But once you get the part number, just call around. Its weird how every dealership has a different price for the same part, sometimes the difference can be 30%
