Preventative repairs/maintenance and reliability modifications

What are the best preventative maintenance measures and reliable modifications I can perform to an M278 powered car to ensure it lasts as long as possible and stays reliable? I’m aware of oil leaking into the cam sensors issue. Also, I know Mercedes aren’t usually cars that people perform DIY repairs and maintenance on, but I love working on cars, so any DIY repair guides and resources you could recommend would be greatly appreciated.

I would say shorter OCI. If not just talking about engine, include transmission fluid, differential fluid etc.

5K OCIs, MB service interval compliance for all other fluids (unless use and abuse warrants more frequent service), new sparkplugs no later than 50K, and keep your tires maintained -- pressure, bal/rot, replaced when down to 1/4 tread depth, and season appropriate.

I guess I would add probably coils? And injectors?

STAYING AHEAD OF TROUBLES... HOW

Once the extreme heatsoaks are cancelled out with better oiling, the coils, injectors, CPS stand a chance to be near lifetime parts.
Else you can add all coolant plastic hoses, heat exchanger, radiator, timing cover seals.

Cheap chain tensioners are good to keep in shape so they don't leak oil pressure.

Serpentine kit are like 50kMi items before belt shreds.

A big part of reliability involves electrical issues centered around low unstable voltage.
  • Float battery to prevent drain
  • Clean poor GND posts
  • Cancel dynamic voltage swings (ALT-LIN)
  • Solder marginal solderless connections

Then you'll have an unusually robust chassis. MB are really well built to be predictable.

I wish I knew what all of that meant. I got keeping the battery posts clean.
