New After Market Wheels

I am looking at a new set of aftermarket wheels but noticed they do not have the extra 5 holes used for doing alignments. Is that a show stopper?

I don’t think those holes are meant for alignments. It should be fine as long as the bolt pattern, hub bore and offsets are compatible.

Thanks for that. I just remember somewhere that those holes were meant for doing alignments, chassis alignment maybe? I could be mistaken. In any case it is interesting that Mercedes wheels and even some aftermarket wheels marketed for Mercedes have those 5 extra holes.

Well, i foolishly spoke without doing some research. You’re right, the factory uses those holes for alignment before shipping out the new cars. Fortunately, the alignment machines found at most garages use a different method to mount the alignment targets to the rims/tires, so you won’t be causing any issues by switching to aftermarket rims without those holes.

a few years back I read online that the holes were meant for cooling. I’m glad to know now that it’s not the case!

I did it, ordered 4 new non-runflat wheels and 4 new Rotiform wheels as follows:

Front 2 - 19x8.5 Rotiform wheels with 2 - Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 255x45 R19
Rear 2 - 19x10 Rotiform wheels with 2 - Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 285x40 R19

These will be replacing 20" AMG wheels with Goodyear F1 run flats. The objective based on multiple testimonies on this forum, is to gain some increased sidewall height for improved ride quality. In current configuration, my Ford F150 pickup rides better that the S560. That needs to be fixed!

There was some confusion on tire size:

On the car:

P245/40R20 Front and P275/35R20 Rear

Window sticker:

P255/35R19 Front and P285/30R19 Rear

AMG spec:

Crossover Tire in 255/45R19 (F), 285/40R19 (R)

In the end, I went with the AMG spec.

Nice, excellent tire choice. Michelin’s all-seasons are an incredibly fantastic tire.

Well, it's on to plan B. Turns out Rotiform wheels do not have sufficient load rating for the Benz so it was back to the drawing board. Wading thru the frustrating maze of tires, wheel weight ratings and availability which turned out to be the biggest hurdle, I decided to keep the original AMG 20" wheels ditch those Goodyear run flats and go with Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 tires. BIG difference in comfortable ride and reduced road noise. Those tar snakes are not so annoying any more. Surely 19" wheels would make a bigger difference but being the impatient type the original AMG wheels will do. Thanks to all who lended advice and direction!
