Blower motor.

Having taken care of the coolant leak into the cowl I take her for a test drive. Back out of the driveway with ambient of 82 degrees. Ummm... why is the blower motor slowing down, speeding up... Turn off HVAC and turn back on... Now blower motor starts to growl. We know what this is.

Parts at MB stocks them. Replace as blower motor and controller.

WIS procedure starts with remove glove box. No need. Remove panel over pax side legs. Three small torx fasteners. Unplug electrical connector to lamp over pax feet. Blower motor is held in with five of same size fasteners. You will need a mirror and flashlight to see them. Unplug connector to blower motor. It wiggles right out. Controller attaches to blower motor. Blower motor plugs into controller.

Reassembly is reverse.

Hour of work start to finish.

Works great.

Original blower motor made it eleven years and 156,000 miles. Can’t complain.

Great!
I always love the work arounds that forum members share with the group.

Nice. Eleven years and 156k is a solid run. Sounded like the controller was failing first then the motor started complaining. Good call on doing both at once. And yeah, you really don’t need to pull the whole glovebox just the knee panel. Five Torx and it’s right there. Mirror trick is key. Hour well spent.

Once out it is obvious bearings in the motor had packed it in. New blower smooth... silent.

If bad things happen in threes I should be done for a while!

I am thinking that I have read that the blower motor can be cleaned and lubricated back to quiet. Not true?

I tried to rehab the fan in the wife’s W212 - no joy.

You can’t get to the bearing, and spraying silicone lube at both ends of the shaft silenced the squeaky fan for about 10 minutes.

Juice isn’t worth the squeeze; esp when living in a climate where not having operational Heat or A/C can be life threatening. Also... once bearings are worn to making the blower motor audible no lubricant will help those bearings (that are clearly not meant to be serviced) live long enough to be worth the effort. I imagine the electric motor is also equipped with brushes that have to be at the end of their life too. A worn out motor may draw a lot more amps. Decades ago when I got to replace them in Volvo 240s by the time the blower motor was done the heater resistor and often wiring to it were cooked.

The tray the blower motor mounts to is included with the replacement MB blower motor. Remove one torx fastener that retains blower motor controller from the old blower motor and install new blower motor controller.

One torx driver, mirror and flashlight are only tools needed.

Removed two more torx screws on old blower motor to verify that brushes and commutator are worn.

Plain bushings that are bearings are sticking to the shaft.

Yup; not serviceable.

MB’s of all kinds.
Did you go with a Genuine MB Part or something you found online? Just curious as I did a blower motor in my 2012 E. I went with a cheap aftermarket online one and it worked great as where MB wanted like $275 for the part.

I got OEM. Blower motor made by Behr so there may be a good aftermarket alternative.

If you can easily access the bushings and want to experiment with swapping the bushings, just for kicks and giggles, let me know. I have tons of bearings leftover from my RC days and might have some that will drop right in. Again, just out of curiosity.

Stamped steel housing shaped around bushings such that they are not coming out. She's not serviceable without going to extra innings. Commutator is worn such that there can't be that much more copper for brushes to conduct electricity to.

Not stupid. You just didn’t know and asked. Now you know.
