Quote: That is my point exactly: tech is so much cheaper to produce and tie together than real switchgear, and is completely automated. You produce some circuit boards, some hi-res touchscreen displays (tablets), a simple twisted pair bus to connect it all together and voila you have an impressive connected system that wows with tech (fingerprint IDs, voice activation, front to rear and rear to front screen sharing, etc.). It looks impressive and performs snappily, but is very cheap to produce and install. IMHO, of course...

As for the W140, we had it 13 years, 90,000 miles and it was the most brilliant car we ever owned. Nothing but praise for it...
I was thinking the same. I do not understand what it costs to produce a car but I have to believe that hard costs on this car are cheaper long term than putting together switchgear and such. The greatest cost in a car like this is probably the R&D.

Is this with inflation factored in?

Also, the W223 S450 outside the US is a 4 cylinder. The W222 S450 was a V6, the new W223 S500 is an inline 6.

The s450s was inline 6 in 222 and is inline 6 in 223. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but the only 4 cylinder S Class' are the 221 S250s and the facelift Chinese s350 petrol.

Sorry, switch gear will be cheaper to produce than the tech in the car. That stuff is cheap.I assume even the LED interior lighting will cost more than the switch gear. As for the screens, they won't be that cheap either (low volume custom OLED screens)... Removing buttons was certainly a purpose-driven decision not due to cost cutting as can be seen on the remaining switch gear which is non-conductive touch (non-moving parts) only.

Correct. Don't know where people get their info from... Only 6 cylinder engines in the W223 S-Class. Even the S450 engine (not coming to the US) is a new EQ hybrid engine; nothing like the old V6. The S500 is a high performance version of the same engine and a step up from the old and new S450, hence the higher price...

I stand corrected with the W223 S450, it's still a 6 cylinder.
The W222 S450 is a TT V6 though, replaced with the W223 S500 EQ inline 6.

They did offer a 4 cylinder W222 in some markets, like the Middle East:

I'm sure they will offer one with the W223 in the future.
