W223 to start nearly $16,000 higher than W222

Exactly. We went from a W126 to the W140 in 1993. The W140 was launched in the USA as a 1992 model, and prices were dramatically higher. But, after initial sales were quite sluggish, M-B provided a factory incentive to dealers to get the cars moving. We benefitted by getting our 1993 S320 (called 300SE that year) for $59,000 while the sticker was $70,000! We'll have to see how the W223s sell or if this history will be repeated as well. Another point on W223 pricing: it seems manufacturing costs would be much less than W222 and earlier due to the completely glass cockpit. There are hardly any switches or buttons to manufacture. Everything is on glass screens that are stuck in front of the driver. It will be interesting to see how well this is accepted as well.

Well don't forget the new W223 comes standard (at least here in the US) with a whole bunch of options such as the Burmeister 3D, which alone cost $8000 on our current W222. So it looks like a winner to me.

Yeah they've done a shuffle to put the base W223 around where the W222 models topped out when options, but they didn't make everything standard only certain things. I think it requires a true deep dive and a lot of number crunching/comparing to see how much more expensive the W223 truly is equipped like a loaded W222. I'm sure this will be done as more people order and compare to their W222 models. The S500 is an upgrade over the S450 in engine and power for sure, and maybe in standard equipment too.

There is actually no big price bump at all. Just wrong info.
The reality is that Mercedes is dropping the S450 for the US and starting the line-up with the more expensive S500 instead. There is a W223 S450 that is not coming here just like there was a W222 S500 which was never brought to the US.
Given that there is a $10k price difference between the W223 S450 and S500 and then a much higher level of standard equipment for US models I think the actual price increase may be less than $2k...

Correct. The S500 is not a direct replacement for the S450. I suspect that they will bring back the S450 later once sales cool off. I also wouldn't be surprised if they introduce RWD S500 and S580 models to also bring down the price a few dollar next year. They're going for the most profitable, big buck, first adopters right now. Gotta strike while the iron is hot.

In the 90’s-2000’s you’d be able to get an S, CL or SL in AMG for 90ish. Times have changes. Let’s go back to the supercharged AMG and V12 AMG models. I miss the old days. This electric stuff is cool but pricing is getting nutty on the higher models

The 223 comes effectively standard with the 4Matic, premium package and drivers assistant package, and a few other features I believe. At least $12,000 worth of previously optional features. I never saw an S450 in stock at my dealership for less then $107,000. And I never saw an S560 for less then $115,000. Mercedes sold a percent of a percent of S Classes with lower MSRPs then that. For the number of standard features and popular options, it’s totally reasonable in my opinion, and it streamlines production. No need to make non massaging front seats, or steering wheels without distronic controls, for the 0.3% of customers that don’t take those options.

As for the W140, we had it 13 years, 90,000 miles and it was the most brilliant car we ever owned. Nothing but praise for it...
