New S vs A8

I havent finished watching this but this is pretty damming.

New S vs Old S:

Poor build quality and louder

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1FBT9ICeSeA&list=WL&index=1&t=1197s

Obviously the opinion of just 1 source so looking forward to more later.

Note how I didn't make any comments comparing the A8 vs the S? It was intentional. I can already see the writing on the wall with how this thread will end, so basically went, "here you go", and then "I'm outta here".

These guys are hilarious.

I saw some of the video, pretty critical of the new S. Cheaper plastics, voice recognition glitchy (picks up every 14 words, ha!), luxury feeling eroded, prior S's felt better. Quite interesting, cant wait to get the feedback from seasoned S class owners.

VAG seems to be on roll with successful model launches and delivering ownership experiences that work reasonably well for customers. The same can’t be said for MB with the recent V167 launch and a list of excuses from dealer service departments about why obvious defects aren’t addressable under warranty.

If a person needs a car in this segment immediately, the Audi is a more robust option because it has been around for a couple of years. The W223 for the first year or two seems to be a high risk gamble based on MBs current trajectory.

If W223 is a must, I would wait at least a year to see how successfully MB executes the launch.

I agree. Early 223 owners are likely to run into tech glitches, we will hear all about them I'm sure.

I would get a 7 Series, personally over the A8. I just don't like Audi's interior or their interface.

I've checked out the a8 in the showroom. Interior doesn't feel like a flagship should. More hard plastics than i expected. The interior in my LS felt more luxurious.

I watched the video, on high speed reading the subtitles. By the way, Swedish in double speed...good times.

I question their assessment of noise. Note they also said the A8 they were driving wasn't especially quiet. I haven't driven a W223 but I have driven several D5 A8s and that car is very quiet, as quiet as anything in this class. So, if they think thats not that quiet their assessment that the W223 isnt as quiet as the W222 doesn't have a lot of credibility.

I think their assessment of the tech edge of the W223 taking away from its overall luxuriousness is valid, based on pictures I've seen. Thats one of the main things I don't like about the D5 A8.

I've personally never been an Audi fan: ever. Don't know why, they've just never appealed to me or exuded much style like MB used to.

At this point, only Audi fans like to think that the A8 is equivalent. This is part of the normal cycle. In a couple of years, Audi and BMW will come up with some nice additional tech that may push them ahead.
As for those who like to find faults with any car, YT is just a click away

The iD3, one of the most important launches for VAG recently was not exactly a smooth sailing ship when it came to technology and build quality.

Good to know. My experience has been with the latest Tiguan in the first person, and second hand via Rennlist on the Panamera and Cayenne.

That is a horrible comparison.

Comparing an A8 to a S Class, sure. But to a main stream electric mass model car? Seriously?

I'm not comparing anything, simply refuting a claim. This post was in response to a previous post about VAG having successful rollouts and launches as of late, when in the case of the iD3, a large and important launch for VAG, was anything but successful. There is no comparison being made.

Frst of all, an A8 feels like VW, whereas a S-class feels like... well, like MB

Have you driven an A8? I don't agree with that at all, the A8 is a very nice driving car

We have all heard that the W223 will be “even quieter” than the W222. My 2020 S560 is SO quiet. If the new S Class is even more so, that will be amazing.

Having been scared off from ordering a new GLE450, due to ALL the quality issues, on a whim, I bought a used, high mileage, 2018 Ford Transit van, just for utility use. For the first time yesterday, I used the touch screen navigation feature. BLOWN AWAY EASY and it worked perfectly. Mind you, I had no idea how to operate this thing and it took me about a third of the time it takes me to use the system in my S560 for the same thing. In addition, the Ford has WIRELESS Apple CarPlay. I sure hope that MB gets the tech in the W223 RIGHT. They have been behind the tech curve for sometime now. Don’t even get me started on the audio in my SL!

Having said all that, an even greater concern is what the ability/attitude for fixing these techno wundermachines is going to be like. Will the dealers be up to the challenge of tracking down all the potential tech demons in these new cars? Cant wait for some of you guys, getting the first W223’s to report. Good luck!

I'm driving a 2020 GLE right now as a loaner while my S560 is in for service. The touchscreen in the GLE is pretty responsive and not too distracting. The Augmented Reality navigation on it is somewhat impressive as well, but of course, the screen is smaller than what the new W223 will have. I've had both touch and non (Lexus LS vs S Class) and haven't had issues with either, though the Lexus was 20 years ago and the tech has improved immensely. The GLE screen is very nice and I almost wish my S560 had one.

Yeah I think that the assessment in the video that the W223 is not as quiet as the W222 is BS.
