S580 Preview

There's been a couple post here already. Just wanted to give my 2cent. Was not able to drive the car.

Don't have much to say about the exterior. The rear always threw me off in pictures and I really didn't care for it. But then again I didn't think the W222 looked all that great when it was unveiled. Every new generation of S class usually have people all worked up over the design. The W223 taillight just gave off too much Japanese automaker vibes initially. Nothing wrong with that but I just want a big German butt. Thankfully the rear is much nicer in person. Granted the preview vehicle is the luxury line and I have the amg styling on the s560, I can't say the rear it's nicer than the outgoing S560 just yet.

Interior is a very nice overall upgrade as always. Very futuristic, can't wait to see what the 3D augmentation is all about when it comes in. This is the first car I've experienced with the 4D sound system. It's pretty neat to be able to feel the music thru the seats. Might consider it for the mid-cycle refresh. Current order is locked in. Will talk about the quirks instead. I'm always geeky and nerdy about interior technologies so everything comes off as cool for me even if it's unnecessary such as the biometrics in this car. I still don't understand why the car needs it, but it's there.
  • Door handle. I'm guessing one would eventually get use to them. You can only open it towards the back part of the handle. It took me more than 1 pull to open the door on the first try lol. I think they went overboard on the door handles.
  • IIRC, all the buttons are touch haptic on the steering wheel, AC vents, etc. Sadly it's been more than a month since the preview but there was definitely something off about the feedback. I just cannot remember if it was the steering wheel or feedback from the screen.
  • The OLED screen to cupholder/center console transition. Still can't get over it. It's kind of hideous.

How did you find the quality, fit, finish, and feel of the interior?

Don't have to worry about this part. On par if not better than the current S. I don't have any issues with the current S

Great review, you should consider a career at Jalopnick or your own youtube channe.
I am sure the inline 6 with hybrid system will have plenty of power. My 16' S550e has no issue getting up and going, it is only a little slower than the regular S550 but I get 40MPG with commutes that I can plug in and regularly get 30-33 on a tank and the car has no issues getting up and going. I have a road that I use to get out of my town Highway 92 out of Half Moon and i am going 100 before I even know it. Most of my friends and family are blown away at how fast it gets up to speed with the typical S-Class shielding.

I will look forward to seeing these on CPO in 3 years when my warranty is out and the original owners take the 50%+ hit on resell value!

I saw three S580s this weekend in Alabama at two different dealerships. All I can say is, OK. Keeping the W222.

Agreed. Interior materials are inferior to W222. Just want the customer to be distracted by the Ipad screen and ambient lighting bling, speedo looks cheap as well. Nothing close to how the 2 screens elegantly integrated on the W222. Haptic buttons on the seat adjustment just don't feel "right" on a car of that level. Exterior is about as boring as it gets and those handles seem to be a major PITA. Predicting mass production and major depreciation. Maybe a good rough use car too own used in 2 years time.

Could literally be used to describe any modern S-Class, including the W222. These are not low production or appreciating assets.

Yup but then with a crazy market such as now, I am not surprised if the mass produced S-Class did appreciate a little (once in the life time at least). I know I know, it doesn't count xD. Either way, once the market goes back to normal, the actual value will show itself again which is way lower than what it is now.

You watch in 3 years these CPO's will be coming in with 55-60 depreciation for sure. I really loved the way the W222 had the screens integrated into the dash and this looks disjointed to me.

I agree, the tech will age it quick as newer tech will replace.

Door handles

So how do you get the door handles to pop out on approach? I can't find any setting for this in my S580 AMG Line...

Should pop up if your key is detectable and within about 1 metre distance from the door.

I have a 2018 S63 and I love it - but my lease is coming up next July, and I just can't get over this new dashboard on the S Class - I think it's horrible - like a copy of a Tesla. My 2018 dashboard screen is great. I do wish I had wireless Apple Car Play, but otherwise that screen layout is great and I am sad to see it go and be replaced by this horrible dashboard.

I haven't yet looked at a new S Class up close - but I am now leaning towards getting a AMG GLS 63 (SUV) or maybe a Maybach GLS 600. And they just got the good dashboard and ditched their crappy iPad screen. Funny stuff. S Class loses the perfect dashboard, and all the other cars are picking up the good dashboard.

Funny World.

I might buy out my S63 lease and see if it goes up in value. First time I ever leased a car - lets see how this plays out

YouTube videos show they will pop out if you rub your hand along the retracted handle. After they pop out, YouTube also shows that you really don't pull them out further to unlatch the door like normal handles, it's just a slight tug on the handle to release the door latch. I believe also you can press a button on the fob to open the doors.

“press button on fob to open doors”
would love that to be the case, but don’t think so. At least, I can’t do it in my new S223

The door handles on my 2021 S580 pop out as I approach the car when it is locked. It happens when I am about 10 feet from the vehicle. If this isn’t happening with your car, try checking the battery…that might have something to do with it. I think SG57 meant that you can push the key fob button to unlock the car and have the handles pop out…I don’t think he meant the doors would open.

I am going to bet you get used to the new format but that said one of the things I loved about the S class (Mine is a 2016) was the dash. I would like Android Auto too, I would think seriously about buying out your lease. What is your residual and drive away?
