Harsh downshifting 9G-tronic transmissions have plagued MB across various models for years now. I have a 2020 S560 that has a very harsh 3-2 downshift. My dealer REPLACED the transmission and torque converter, but the problem still persists and MBUSA has agreed to buy the car back. I was told by the dealer that the problem had been cured and that all W223’s would be fine. It appears from this thread that this is not the case. Amazing!

I test drove an S580 and experienced a harsh downshift or two during the test drive.

I see, I don't know what to say as I was hoping MB at least have this figured out for the W223. They didn't, it was a common issue on the W222: https://mbworld.org/forums/s-class-w...ispreloading=1
I can only wish you good luck in getting this issue mitigated or better yet, completely fixed. Some dealerships are willing to help you adjust the transmission adaptation by setting shifts points via Xentry.
Sorry to hear that as well, hopefully you too get yours fixed soon. You should also ask your dealership if they are willing to manually adapt shift points for you.

My “beater” is a 2018 Ford Transit 350XLT van with 150,000 miles on the clock. The transmission is as smooth as silk. MB has a definite problem with their transmissions and/or the software/electronics that operate them, and it has been going on and on and on! Now we hear of these issues in their brand new, uberluxo W223 S Class and one really needs to ask the question: WTF are these folks doing??? Are they trying to run the company into the ground? A new S Class should be virtually free from most all noise, vibration and harshness, yet these harsh, jolting transmission issues seem to continue unabated. Someone in Stuttgart needs to get fired and NOW! This is just NUTS!

That being said, I still prefer ICE MBs.

I am kind of wondering if their transmissions still exhibits these symptoms in Mercedes-Maybach models. That will be embarrassing.

In all fairness the 9G is lightyears ahead of the 7G on a myriad of levels, the 9G in my new at the time S2017 550 coupe was flawless but that car had other issues with a weird vibration at idle that my 2016 550 7G coupe did not have, but the 16's 7G was uber harsh at times and nothing remedied it . FWIW the at idle vibration only affected the 2017+ awd S models as the S cab and rwd sedans were not affected. With all that said the 9G downshifting issue is most likely not mechanical (that's why the above mentioned mechanical repairs were unsuccessful) and is software related with one cause being they keep tweaking attempting better MPG's which affects shift points and other related items. Rough downshifting is definitely not normal, no engineer would purposely design a modern gearbox to shift harshly, if the dealer told someone that, tell them to stop insulting your intelligence.
I wish MB would stop using their own gearboxes and go with the super reliable, swift and smooth shifting ZF units.

At least they "verified" the concern instead of " TEST DRIVEN VEHICLE, CANNOT DUPLICATE AT THIS TIME, CUSTOMER MONITOR" that I always get. Therefore, I guess we can call that progress

“Found all adaptations in spec” speak with shop foreman or lead tech and ‘suggest’ they reset transmission up/down shift data via Xentry and perform transmission adaptation of complaint shifting(s) with cold, warm and hot transmission oil during road test.

My s580 has similar abrupt engine braking / fast slowdown and I see 3rd gear on the screen while braking to a stop. Thanks for having the tech check yours out for us..saves me time so I don’t have to drop mine off and get the same result.
I only have a few hundred miles but I’m getting use to it. When it happens it’s far from ideal but ce la vie.
3 photos. Love the car inside and out. The multi contour massage seats are wonderful as well as the ambient lighting, hud, and 4.5degree rear steering.
