Flushed Door Handles in Emergency

Hi All,

Just curious if anyone is concerned about the door being stuck in an emergency. Rather gruesome death happened in 2019, old news, but still. RIP Dr. Omar.

No more MB:(
Terrible story. While tech certainly has contributed to many great safety advances, it can also cost lives. How did this design get approved?

Traditional door handles would not help if the doors are locked (while driving). I would assume Mercedes to unlock doors if a crash is detected, likely door handles popping up too? Don't know if it was "only" a fire. Wonder if Tesla was supposed to do the same but something failed?

By the way, flushed MB door handles can be pulled without a key. Press the front part of the handle and it should pop up from the rear enough. Here too does not help unless door locks are open.

EDIT: more info about the tasks a Mercedes would automatically perform in an accident. Didn't remember it also opens side windows. Also remember that Mercedes has put a lot of effort on door design to enable opening of doors even after a sever crash.

I believe the door handles on the W222 models were perfect. They were comfortable to use, looked good, no issues. They should have just left “perfect” alone. I could think of a few other places those design & engineering Euros could have been better spent.

Agreed but reminds me that my W221 rear door handle was misbehaving when new. Nothing serious though, a bit tight if I remember right and some lubrication and use fixed it. Still not perfect when new and you introduce the car to someone.
