As others, I was having issues with pirellis on the 21 inch 255/35/21 wheels on the new s580. Other members suggested to go 255/40/21 as the S63 has those specs without any rubbing. BUT I did not change the rear and left the 285/30/21. Do I need to change to 285/35/21 or will the 30s be okay?

 

Did you replace all 4 tires with the 4S or just the fronts? I would highly recommend replacing the rears with 285/35R21 as it will keep it within same rolling diameter as the front 255/40R21s. It will be hard on the 4 matic system to have the rears with diameter less than the front which is greater than 3% diameter difference.

 

Switching to PS4S will not solve your problems, only delay them.

Baloo588 and I both had our P-zeros replaced with PS4S, thinking the thicker side walls of the PS4S will help prevent blow-outs. They didn't. We have both since moved onto 19s.

My suggestion - do not bother replacing the tires on your 21s. Complete waste of money.

Instead, swap the rims out for 19s or 20s immediately, to cut your losses.

 

I do want to point out that I'm riding the 19s during winter with the Michelin xice tires and 20s OEM for summer with the Michelin Pilot sport as n spec tires size 255/40r20s. The ride is perfect overall year round now. 1st and 2nd pics are the summer 20s and last pic is the winter 19s.

 

How is the noise level with the *** Baloo?

 

Very quiet compared to the 21s summers. The tire is spec for the Porsche Panamera hence why. I had these on my previous 2012 A8l and they lasted 40k miles .

I agree with recommendation to go 19"/20" wheels instead of changing to 21"... I had 19" wheels on lighter GLK350 and had no problems with potholes in NYC roads. My GLB35 AMG came with 21" Conti Summer 255/35ZR21 from the dealer though I was looking for 19" tires (during Covid shortage). The ride wasn't complaint esp with AMG shocks and even rim rubber trim opened up twice driving in NYC...

I was looking to change the summer tires for winter but there was no winter and A/S tire options for 21". I ended up ordering 20" Michelin Alpin 5 255/40ZR20 winter tires from Costco. Afterwards I bought Mandrus Estate 20"x8.5" wheels from ebay CWO shop (with very good phone support) with ET 42 in comparison to ET51 OEM. Costco doesn't install third party wheels other than what they sell in their online wheel shop from another manufacturer and didn't even have the tire pressure sensors. My Indie repair shop installed it with no problems. 20" winters are more compliant esp with softer compound, but I still use it with higher psi due to potholes in winter.

After I told the MB service about it, service recommended switching to the 21" A/S. Michelin PS A/S 4 became available last Spring, so I installed them on 21". They are more compliant compared to 21" summers, but not to 20" winters. 21" wheels need higher air pressure compared to 19"/20" wheels, so tire comfort was not a big difference on same size wheels.

This week, I ended up with 19" Michelin PS A/S 4 after 1.5 years. The difference is day and night in compliance with lower air pressures compared to 20"/21". I bought this time online with Extreme Customs. They were quick, but only communication was by phone text as they don't answer emails/phones. Mandrus wheels are sold out, so I bought TWS wheels with same specs as Mandrus as Mandrus is under TWS. I chose 19x8.5" ET42 TWS Cylipse Titanium finish. They came installed with air pressure sensors + bolts in 1 week to my home with 2 day Fedex shipping with Sunday delivery. I went to Costco to replace the winters with new wheels. However, new 19" wheels didn't clear the AMG brake calipers. Luckily I had Bonoss 10mm wheel spacers in storage for the winter wheel installation that I didn't use it previously, so the wheels were installed with it. Wheels are more on the outside, but again Michelin 255/45ZR19 PS A/S4 has 7.9" tread width in comparison to 9" with 255/35ZR21 PS AS4 or 8.5" with 255/35ZR20 winters, so the tires are in line with the fender.

I have not checked the dealer for their wheel packages as AMG wheels are very expensive compared to third party options. MB service was saying that they have that option. Also there are other people upsizing their wheels and selling them on here or craislist or ebay (or FB)... I was looking at the S wheels, but the ET is not matching to GLB35 spec. Also a few has the tire option that I want eg Michelin PS AS4 or Conti DWS06+. For example one listing that I was following on ebay with original MB wheels with Michelins PS AS4:

Get your dealer or a knowledgeable specilist shop to do the wheel swap, because there are tire-pressure sensors on your rims, and they need to be removed and transplanted onto the new ones.

 

For some reason I thought you had picked up the aero wheels. Getting too damn old I guess.

I had my independent dealer mount and properly road force balanced the tires on them. Got the tires from tire rack as usual. Sold the 21s with the 4s for a great price.
Make sure to order them as non staggered under the options.

Thanks, found them, so $1755 plus tax + whatever dealership will charge to install and mount them, anyway i can talk dealership into having the 3rd party company cover these under tire warranty if it bursts? I spent around $3k for tire package before my 2 tire bursted ($1100 lost) and now if these new tires are not covered, that 3k goes down the drain, insanity !

 

These tires come with free road hazard coverage from tire rack anyways so you are good. I never had any issues with this same size even on my older a8 with the 20s in the past 7 years so I doubt you will have any issues and will be very happy. I personally never get tire wheel insurance but then again I never had any major issues. 😊

 

Costco has them for $1635.96+tax before $150 cash back which covers the installation fee, so you get them installed free and it comes with Costco road hazard warranty... I used the Michelin PS A/S4 both in 21" and 19" with no problems so far. AS4 is cheaper, but sold out at Costco...

I got the tire/wheel insurance protection due to 21" wheels, since my coworkers had blown tires with their BMW X5, 7 series, and a Mini (all with RF tires). I only used the warranty for road rash repair on OEM 21" wheels... My problem is the harshness of 21" wheels with bad roads on AMG shocks... Similarly I have winter tires and we only had 2.2" snow in NYC last winter... It is better to be on the safe side...

 

I personally always have my tires/wheels road force balance by an experience tech at an independent dealer that is a tirerack installer. They do excellent job in getting the wheels balanced properly for smooth ride like the factory. I never take any of my luxury cars to Costco or Discount tire. They rush and just do dynamic balancing which isnt great and not as smooth like road force balance.

Hunter Road Force machines are at the dealers and certain independent dealers. Discount and Costco may not have them and those who have them have techs who are clueless how to use them properly. I am sensitive to tire vibration so hence why. I always request them to mount the tire with the rim to get the perfect round assembly of no more than 10-12 lbs of run out before doing the dynamic balance with weights.

 

Dealership contacted TIRE Warranty company and they said "These Michelin's are NON-RUN flat and once you have a tire burst on Michelin - it can damage the RIM and we cannot cover that under the policy" --> i still told them that it won't burst as bad as PIRELi's which are run flats and always keep bursting.

 

Unfortunately cut your losses, get the tire wheel warranty prorated refunded and cancel it. It's not worth it. Stick with the tire rack road hazard and you will be fine. I never had any issues with Michelins popping. Just rarely a puncture and they hold air well. Never bent a rim, just have to be proactive with pot holes.

I've cancelled tire wheel insurance on my Audi before and they refunded me 3/4th the cost after one year. Never needed it

 

I agree. The 19" option is the best option.

 

It's funny how I have a 2022 Audi S8 with 21" P Zeros and I have had absolutely no problems at all with my tire /wheel setup yet on the MBs they are a nightmare. The ride I get with my 21" wheel/tire setup is the best I've ever encountered. I drove 150mph on the Talladega 500 raceway and not a single shudder or shake.

 

Lotta variables in it; tires, wheels, the weight of both, aspect ratio, the bead, bead seat, suspension, weight of the car, etc. You're definitely not wrong, we were talking about it on the other thread: This combo (for whatever reason) is certainly a failure; similar cars are running 21s without much issue.

 

Thanks, lets see - my options are:
1. Quick fix - another pireli - covered by warranty - but will POP in max 3 months
2. Michelin - all 4's changed out of pocket 2k and get warranty cancel and partial refund
3. MIchelin - if the existing tire warranty company covers it, then i don't need to get it cancel and reimburse (3 tires covered by them already $500 each)

 

At least you got some good options. I've been driving almost 1 year on the 20s with the Michelins with exception of the winter months with the 19s and I do 90 miles of driving a day highway and city without issues. Like everyone is saying you can't bust a Michelin as they are very robust. You will get reimbursed for a new Michelin up to 2 years with the included tire rack road hazard if it's not repairable anyways. Keep us posted.
