I think for journalist that get the car for a few hours in some cases, it was a lot harder to swallow.
I hated the first iDrive as well. My father had an early E60 5er and I remember how clunky the controls were at the time compared to my simple E46. How I miss that car so much.

Well,
Most of the 7 Series customers were folks that were not really comfortable with "computer" style commands, let's say. Too me ( obviously I was a lot younger) it was a delight, it was something innovative, new and extremely efficient. As I remember right using the IDrive you could skip like 100 clicks on different buttons/ screens.

For better or worst, I have been a Mercedes owner for a very long time, coupled with many good and bad experiences. This allows for the opportunity to compare them in severity. I may also try to provide a reason why I believe things are happening, something to can take or disregard. This certainly doesn't make me a fanboy.
When I think a certain issue is a small one, it is simply my assessment compared to what I have seen prior. You may think it's significant.

But I also appreciate if you wouldn't simply dismiss the reasons because you disagree or lack the experience with the brand. After all, we all expect perfection from the cars we drive and entrust our families with. Unfortunately no car is perfect.

Then you are also misreading my posts. I'm also trying to provide perspective as to why someone would look at whats posted here and it would make them justifiably concerned about making a purchase. No car is perfect, but some cars are more perfect than others. This car has a lot of owners who are frustrated with it for one reason or the other, thats clear by reading this forum. If my "lack of experience with the brand" means I expect too much then perhaps chassis is right about MB lol. One person having a big problem or even a few people doesn't concern me, the general negative attitude about the car from the participants of the forum does concern me. Your argument to explain away these issues is nothing but "Whataboutism"...

ANY issue with a car is a huge pain. Having your car that you are paying a lot for or paid a lot for off the road for weeks at a time is just not something most people are interested in dealing with. I've dealt with it, it sucks. Even if those things are not "severe", they aren't something I want to deal with when I don't deal with those things now.

Interesting. Which new Mercedes model do you think would fit your description of trouble-free and well liked? No G-Wagon please...

Money and quality, if we pay such price for a car, even if it drives ( unfortunately not in your case ) that doesn't mean it is a quality car the way it should be. My 560 has an incredible drive, smooth and quiet. But for quite some time, since the dealer was clueless, I was chasing interior rattles by myself, after using felt on all the doors, pillars, dash, glove compartment, finally the center console was the culprit, felt it and now inside is it so quiet like in the Toledo cathedral in Spain !
Thanks for mentioning rattles. I've got at least one in my S580, but being the understanding fellow that I am, I have never mentioned it here or to my dealer.
It is my feeling that the rattle is caused by the jarring EABC suspension.

but then.... Range Rover is a different tier, no? More expensive than an S-Class? Might be wrong.

That said, someone commented Volvo's sound system is better than MB so there is that.

I see, that reminds me, didn't someone said some report with survey of customers complaining about how difficult is it to use MBUX when it first came out?

I'm assuming by grouping the packages Mercedes save on economies of scale for RHD vehicles; it's been this way for every vehicle they've offered since they refreshed all their cars in 2018/19. There's also been certain years when they haven't had interior colours on certain cars which is bizarre, when I ordered an E Class cabriolet there was only the standard black available, the year before and after there was 4
I see, so audi too.

Ya they group it I guess it has to do with what you mentioned. There is also Australia having an agency model pricing...

Hmmm sounds like a repeat but for MB instead then, some S-Class buyers being overwhelmed with the new tech, layers of menus etc.

The S Class and Range Rover are the 2 main luxury cars here, they're not the same tier per say but they're owned by the same sort of customers. Range Rover SVR was about 120k GBP, Autobiography D350 about 125-130k which included the 30-odd speaker 1600w system and S350 Premium Plus about 105.

They've done that here too now, dealers get 5% commission and also whatever commission they get from selling the car on a finance agreement. Began start of this year. No one likes it but we like the cars they produce so what can we do lol

Ouch even UK gets that agency model pricing treatment? Hopefully other brands don't jump on the bandwagon.

Funny, I went to a dealership for an oil change and the next day I've bought my S560. After reading a lot about it and watching some YouTube review videos ( which by the way were extremely positive ) there was a lot of consensus from the reviewers ( young people ) that Mercedes should offer a one day class/driving to all the buyers, regardless the age (!) before delivering the car, so, apparently that is the case.
I don't know about the W223 configuration but this W222 has so much stuff buried between screens and clicks that in order to use all the features you really need a lot of knowledge, good thing is that once you learn what is necessary for you that is about it !
Ergonomics wise Lexus #1 , Mercedes #2 !

I'm totally happy with the one I am driving. As for new model...unfortunately I don't know that there is one right now, at least not one that I would be interested in driving. We drove a GLS that we liked a lot today, I know there are issues there too...but at least there that vehicle would replace a vehicle I already don't like. Its the risk of replacing a vehicle I like that is the issue for me.

I think the Range Rover and the S Class are very comparable in tier. The RR is actually cheaper than the S Class...

All this talk about the S & GLS got me wondering: is the Maybach GLS made in the US or Germany? So, I googled it and look what comes up:
The Maybach S Class is made in Vance???

Don't get me wrong, I was a long way from in love with it but I didn't feel it merited the hate heaped upon it in the media. There were very many cases where I read commentary and I could tell the person did not know how to use it and was making a fuss over something that wasn't actually one of it's problems. Or, that person had never used it at all. There were problems, it needed work. But, nah, it didn't merit the kind of vitriol people were giving it. I spent many hours waiting for that car with other owners while dropping it off, picking it up, or just waiting because at that time I had a house in the country and had to travel 2 hours to get to the dealership. There was widespread hate for the problems, hate for the fact it could take a week to reprogram the car which was seemingly always the fix for the problem, but the idrive; not so much. It's got problems but wasn't as bad as the journalist were making it sound. That was kind of the consensus. An aside; I don't like the new "fixed" idrive any better than the old "broken" idrive. The menu tree has become straight forward and cohesive; once you saw the layout you could get around well, it was easy, but l didn't find it pleasurable to use.

Who doesn't miss the E46?

To me iDrive was ahead of its time, and of course the first implementation of something is going to be full of problems...but it revolutionized the way car infotainment would be done for the next 20 years...
