I have owned my 2014 E550 since November of 2013 and it is time that I need to start looking for a new vehicle. We have a great relationship with our local Merceds dealer so I want to stay within the brand. I also want a car at least as powerful as the E550. The closest E class would be the E450 or the E53. However those optioned up would be close to 100k for the E450 and likely over that for the E53. Paying that much for an E class without a V8 seems too much.
That has me thinking that a S580 CPO could be a great alternative. Yes I know there is an obvious size difference. But now more so than before, the E class interior seems to be a knock off from the S class. Might as well get original.
What would you get a new 214 or a CPO W223? I appreciate any insights.
2020 S560 Sedan, 2019 SL450, 2019 E450 Luxury Trim Wagon, '24 BMW I7 on order...
Being the house contrarian, let me voice my vote for a CPO W222 S Class. A way, WAY better car, in my humble opinion. There are still 10K & 20K mile, pristine examples out there and they are cheap! Best of luck to you.

That is my other option but I have not seen any S560 4 Matics with AMG that fit that mileage.

If only they equipped the facelift W222 with the newer MBUX that was already or almost out there around that time in 2018 …. It would have been truly a timeless vehicle, or it would have increased it’s lifetime by at least another 5 years. The technology and infotainment really sucks per nowadays standards, but otherwise it’s a well rounded car and I loved both of my W222s. Once you get used to seamless infotainment systems, no keys with phone-as-key tech, well integrated phone app, newer drive assist systems, etc, it gets hard to keep the W222 longer… at least for those who appreciates the technology in today’s car, even that in the W223 nowadays though it’s not the best. The new E-class tech is a good example. Newer BMWs and ID8 are also excellent.
Even when compared to BMWs with not so recent ID7 from the 2019-2023 era, which they all overlapped with my W222 ownership too, they made the W222 feels a bit too old that even the lack of simple things like wireless apple carplay or quick loading was really bothering me despite of how much I liked the car.
In summary, cars have a reasonable lifetime before they become inferior to newer cars no matter how good they are or they were. Otherwise I would buy another LS430 and would tell you that my LS430 is the best car in the world now (but it was only that for a very long time before it aged and has become inferior to all cars no matter how great this car is). man, that was an awesome car in it’s time, better than anything I have ever seen to date relatively speaking.

I owned a W212 (2014 E350) which got totaled and (stupidly) replaced it with a newer W213 (2021 E350), The W212 was better. The W213 tech often requires me to look away from the road, the voice command system is less usable (gets it wrong often and doesn't support the same words that the touch screen menus use), the in-cabin storage space is far less, the miniscule steering wheel swipe pads misfire nearly always and the touch buttons usually require multiple button pushes, the console based touch pad often either misses or doubles the swipes and often misses the push-downs and requires 2-3 pushes, the screen based menu trees are far too complex and the important stuff is buried in deep menu choices which I will never use, the NAV system doesn't understand zip codes but requires cities, the transmission jerks in lower gears especially on downshifts, the blind spot sensors misfire or don't fire, and there is no CD and no spare tire. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a fully-optioned W212 and after 4 months of looking I gave up and bought a fully optioned 2021 CPO. There are a few pluses (better torque at 30mph, larger screen, and a little bit more safety). Good luck with the choice, but I would definitely go with a older car that hasn't been ruined with too much spotty tech and too little "robustness". The tech would be fine if the user controls weren't so bad and there wasn't any of the newer car "decontenting" (spare tire, CD, cabin storage).

BTW, if nobody here cares about the driving dynamics, w214 has a brand new MBUX based on Mercedes OS, with extra goodies, like video streaming and such.
Also good alternative for S63 and it is half price but not half as good.
The E53 is tempting. However, the reliability of turbocharging, supercharging, and electrical motors in one car has me worried. Also, if I can option up an E450 to 90k, the E53 will be over 100K which is too expensive for what it is. Hence, I am thinking of a cpo S class.
Thats a little surprising to hear. My sister has a W213 and it doesn't feel much like my W212. They must have reverted back on the drive feel. Looks wise I would take a W212 all day over the W214 with it's stupid looking tail lights.
Yep apparently the original owner bought the car and did not like the color and trim combination (Cirrus Silver with the Metal Matrix Trim). It was traded in a 2024 in Blue with 22 inch wheels a couple of weeks afterwards. Ironically I think someone did an internet review on that car or at least I think because the review published around the same time the cars were switched and the car was loaned from the same dealership.
The car has an in service date of December 31, 2023. I am going to get the extra two years of CPO so I will have the car in warranty until end of 2030.
Wow! Can you imagine taking that depreciation hit because of the color?!
I cannot imagine that. I agonize over big purchases way too much. On the upside for me, the car has all the options I would have ordered including rear wheel steering and the initial depreciation hit is over.
