Brutal Hankook Tire Issue

Hi, got a nail barely in the the shoulder/sidewall of my front tire today. Tire is trashed. No Hankook Ventus S1 Noble 2 run flat 255/40R20 101H tires within 800 miles of where I am located in Massachusetts, Nearest tire is in Louisianna and Callifornia. Why do they even put these tire on the car? WTF?

Anyone rip these pieces of crap off and replace with a
conventional tire...like a nice Michelin? Please give me some advice. I just don't want to impact the performance/ride too much.

THANK YOU

To the OP:

When I took delivery of my 2022 S580, it came with Hankook run flats and was equipped with 19” wheels & E-ABC. Hating run flats as I do, I started looking for alternatives.

After researching all the major brands, it came to a choice between Pirelli and Continental. I went with Continental Procontact RX T2 255/45/19. These have the noise canceling foam inside. MUCH improved ride and the quietist tires I have ever had. That said, the ride quality of the car was always an issue with me and never rode nearly as good as my three previous W222’s with Magic Body Control. More info than you wanted, but I wanted to be clear. Best of luck to you.

A 255/40R20 is the standard tire size on the AMG's. There are a lot of choices if you want to use non-run flats as the AMG's do. I have tried most brands on my S65, the Michelin Pilot Sport 4s is by far the best, and also the most expensive of the non run flats. These are summer tires, not all season tires. Michelin makes an all season version but I have never tried them.

Tom, Thank you. Great minds think alike...The Michelin Pilot Sport AS 4 is exactly what I've been eyeing--I'm sure they have similar characteristics to the 4S's you had good luck with...and they are reasonably priced/readily available, and have a good reputation/rating. I did locate a matching Hankook runflat tire at a MB dealer 35 miles from me, and the MB roadside assistance people agreed to flatbed the car to that dealership and then provide a Lyft ride for me when the car is ready. That was nice. So for now, the $450 Hankook will be my short-term solution and since it's been about 10 years since I picked up a nail in a tire, I'm hoping my luck will resume until I wear these tires out and then flip to the Michelin conventional tire.

That's a good deal with MB Roadside Assistance. I have been using the MB dealer for tires for the last 10 years. With their specials and the discount coupons I get from MB the cost is only slightly more than places like Discount tire. I just got fed up with wheel scratches and poor balancing. At the MB dealer the tires are almost always in stock, I can have a free loaner, the car can be aligned as part of the process and I get a free car wash.

right I have those too on an AMG, I even race them, but on s580 might be a waste.

The AMG models have staggered wheels, That is the front size, the rears in the 20 option are 285/35R20. There are only 19 options on TireRack that fit it, and only 4 of those are All Season tires, and only 1 of those is not a run flat. So if you want non run flats to fit a W223 with 20s in the AMG line your only choice is Michelin Pilot Sport A/S4

As a comparison my W222 with 19s and the AMG line there are 46 options, 38 non run flat. With 20s on the 222 there are 47 options, 39 non run flat.

I've had PS4s, and the AS4s. I'd be expecting a little more road noise with the AS and a slightly more compliant ride. For this car it wouldn't matter, but when pushed the PS4s have a lot more grip. In fact, if you go flush, they'll pick up little rocks and chip the side of the car: Mo sticky for sure.

No idea how far the *** will go because I don't keep cars long, but no question they'll outlast a PS4. I never tried the *** in any weather, we don't get much in my area.

If the nail is in the sidewall, then the tire is toast. But if it is close, you might get a second opinion if it isn't too late. I say this because my Mercedes dealer (RBM of Atlanta) discovered a nail in one of my tires during my B1 service and said the tire could not be patched, only replaced. My tire shop (Butler Tire) that I've been going to for years patched the tire (and many, many more over the years) for free. So, again, if not too late, you might get a second opinion rather than trusting your MB dealer's opinion or policy.

The nail was in the "shoulder" outside of the major tread groove running the circumference of the tire, so I think it was probably best to replace it. It appears as though MB is trending away from Hankook and toward Pirelli these days. Even Tire Rack didn't have the Hankook for my car. A lot of tire places won't even patch a runflat, since the tire could have be severely damaged if actually run flat and should be trashed.
