All started with intermittent check engine light on and off. Car first spent 3 weeks at the dealer, they did some updates and said all is well. After one day of driving the CEL came on again, took car back to the dealer, after spending one week there got the car back, they couldn’t find anything wrong, updated and cleared codes. They were getting comm error codes. After one more week of driving CEL is on again, three days later smoke started coming from inside the hood with burning smell. Opened the hood and saw some wires and sensors on the firewall was burning away and smoking bad.
now the car is towed back at the dealer for diagnosis. My service advisor is very good.
now I am worried what could have happened if I hadn’t stoped the car to check. The car was driving perfect, except for the burning smell of you open the passenger side window.
any one else had similar issues or incidents.
TIA
please check the video below.

Wow, very unlucky. I do hope it gets resolved to your standards. As someone else said, maybe it would have been better to catch on fire so you could merely wash your hands of that particular car.
Good luck!
Good luck!

Contacted Mbusa started a case
Hello guys!! Thanks for all your concerns and ideas.
visited the dealer, MB of grapevine, tx, and they haven’t started on the car yet. Spoke with the manager and expressed my concern with the smoke and fire in the car. Ofcourse they were very concerned about it.
now I have started a case with MBUSA regarding this issue.
hopefully will hear from them in the next 3 to 4 days. I have expressed my concern about the car and so on. Let’s see what they have to say.
Hate this process. The car was so good and I loved it!!!

Update!! Fire / smoke engine bay W223, S580 2022
Just heard back from the dealership. They think the heat shield for some reason came LOOSE, and over time started cutting on the wires and this shorting other systems out. Causing electrical components to catch fire and started smoking. Like I said the car spent almost a month at the dealership just days before this incident. They should have seen that damage. They THINK this is what caused CEL to light up.
wouldn’t engine diagnoses show something electrical is going on, otherwise what good are they. They performed numerous diagnostic test for the cel light and found nothing.
so they have ordered few harnesses from Germany and other places. definitely will take forever to fix.
On dealerships behalf, they are being very courteous and keeping me informed of any and all updates. Have used them for over 20 years with no issues at all. Great people.
questions!! Could this have caused a major fire??
would this solve the CEL issue?
could this happen again??
what about other cars like mine out there. Could the same happen to them with loose firewall heat shields?
What do you think??

It does not look like a loose heat shield. An abrasion from the wire rubbing would look different than one that gets cut, or melts. If it was cut, I’d expect xentry to find it. If it was previously abraded and two wires shorted, I’d expect xentry to have logged the code. The wires are also zip tied and protected from abrasion. Unless THEY cut a zip tie. I do not believe in coincidences like this. This looks like a constant “on” situation that drew power way over the limit of the wire. If you’ve ever hooked up a jumper cable wrong or wired anything backwards, you see it get red hot pretty immediately.
If I’m interpreting correctly, they replaced some wiring harnesses and that would be my concern Of first investigation. Did they touch that area AT ALL, even just to unplug from ground during work, or had that wire been part of the harness shotgun approach.

I think this picture clarifies the short and was so hot it melted the loom next to it.
From the video and the zip ties look like they are in place… when viewing the whole video.

Thanks, and sorry about that. Maybe it's time to change your signature line now? lol, JK! Keep us posted and good luck with next steps. BMW buyback was fairly easy for me when I encountered a non-fixable issue earlier this year..

i think this recall for 2023 and 2024 S Classes also includes the 2022,
the stop sale was for the 80 amp high voltage battery fuse, if that malfunctions, than definitely there is a chance of a fire.
let’s see what they have to say.
There is a recall for the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class due to a high-voltage battery monitoring system that may not alert the driver of a battery malfunction. The recall action is for dealers to update the battery management system software at no cost to the owner. Owner notification letters were mailed starting on August 18, 2023. Owners can also contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

That they suggested heat shield damage knowing this recall/stop sale for a safety system was out there, is worrisome.
I truly have to ask. Have you broached return of the car/ lemon law. Who knows what kind of energy went through other modules by this point. This is a failed safety system and warrants releasing the car out of your possession. In fact, a lawyer may say the negligence and purposeful misleading (abrasion) by the shop is cause for a lawsuit as it put you and your family’s lives in jeopardy.
Nobody wants to have to go through the lawyer headaches now and into the future and all parties should be agreeable that this solution is a valid and reasonable expectation. People’s houses are still in jeopardy from bcm failures on older sl models and one could jump to the conclusion that this issue is going to plague this model for years to come.
Good luck because as of now that they did not move quickly to find a solution means they may be working in the background because there is no good solution…that is different than what they may have already looked into.

Why are you waiting? Thats not usually in your best interest. You've given them plenty of time and a fair chance to fix it, which they did by almost incinerating your car... What if this happened at speed on the highway etc, it could have killed you or others

What will this do to the carfax or the value of the car even if it's fixed 100%? Carfax won't elaborate that "due to a fire, these things were fixed etc" but if someone gets a VMI would that be spelled out?
diminished value?
diminished value?

It will destroy the value of the car. MB needs to be buying this one back. I'm fighting CARFAX right now on a very minor accident. Minor accident and the police immediately reported it to CARFAX as major damage, and when I say immediately, I mean within 30 minutes of the incident. The recklessness of the police department cost me $20K in depreciation. If I don't get the CARFAX report corrected, you can bet on it that a lawsuit is in the future towards the police dept. No police officer should be a body shop mechanic at 7:00 P.M. The insurance company and the body shop should make those assessments. The Audi dealership shop said this car is perfectly fine and nothing but minor damage occurred. Good luck fighting CARFAX, but more importantly, get MB to buy this car back.
